Bit of an interesting one this — has anyone had success pairing the Lynx Smart BMS with non-Victron lithium packs? Specifically thinking about repurposed or grey-market cells rather than the usual Fogstar/Pylontech route.

I've been running a 48V system in my van conversion with a Victron MultiPlus-II and four Fogstar Drift 100Ah cells managed through a Lynx Smart BMS, and the whole ecosystem works brilliantly when everything's speaking the same language over VE.Can. The BMS does its job elegantly — cell balancing data straight into VRM, proper charge/discharge limits communicated automatically.

But I've been looking at some of the repurposed industrial battery modules floating around — CATL, Huawei, BYD ESS packs — which can offer serious capacity at genuinely tempting prices. The catch is always the BMS compatibility question.

My understanding is the Lynx Smart BMS is designed specifically to work with Victron-compatible lithium batteries that support the proper DVCC communication protocol. If a pack doesn't speak that protocol natively, you're essentially flying blind — no proper cell-level comms, just voltage-based guessing, which defeats the whole point.

Has anyone here actually integrated one of these repurposed industrial packs into a Victron system successfully? I'm wondering whether:

  • Anyone's used a third-party BMS (Daly, JK, Seplos etc.) as an intermediary layer
  • Whether the Cerbo GX can bridge the gap via a custom driver
  • Or whether it's simply not worth the headache versus buying a proper compatible pack

The price differential on some of these industrial modules is substantial enough that I'd love

@CamperGeek yes, running repurposed Huawei telecom cells here in my Vivaro conversion — they're genuinely excellent chemistry (LFP, well-balanced from factory). The Lynx Smart BMS won't natively communicate with non-Victron packs, so you lose the DVCC magic unless you bridge it through a custom BMS like the JK or Daly with a Victron-compatible UART/CAN interface.

What actually works well:

  • JK BMS flashed to communicate via VE.Can protocol
  • Cerbo GX picking up cell-level data cleanly
  • Victron handling charge control as if it were a proper Smart Battery

The Huawei cells themselves are rock solid — typically 200Ah+ per module at 48V nominal. Worth every penny from the grey-market suppliers floating around.

Main caveat: you're outside Victron's supported config, so document everything carefully if you ever need warranty support on the Lynx hardware itself.

@VivaroWanderer the Huawei telecom cells are basically the open secret of the van life world — incredible capacity density for the price, just don't ask where the network cabinet used to be 🤫

Worth noting the Lynx Smart BMS will throw a proper tantrum if your BMS comms protocol doesn't play nice — I've had mine sulk for days on the boat when the cell balancing data wasn't presenting correctly over VE.Can. Get yourself a proper UART/CAN adaptor sorted before you commit, otherwise Victron Connect just stares at you blankly like a confused labrador.

@CamperGeek the Lynx Smart BMS is specifically designed for Victron's own lithium batteries — it's not a generic BMS you can just wire to arbitrary cells. It communicates over a proprietary protocol and expects particular battery behaviour.

What you'd actually want for Huawei telecom cells is something like a Daly or JK BMS feeding data into Victron's ecosystem via the GX device using the CAN-bus or VE.Can DVCC setup. That's how most of us running non-Victron cells actually do it.

@VivaroWanderer is right that those Huawei cells are cracking chemistry — I've seen the specs and they're hard to argue with — but don't let enthusiasm for the cells lead you down a compatibility rabbit hole that ends with a very expensive paperweight bolted to your van wall.

Research the Victron DVCC documentation before buying anything.

@LiFePO4Nerd is right and everyone else is setting themselves on fire slowly — Lynx Smart BMS talks CANbus to Victron-specific battery profiles, full stop. Grey-market telecom cells might have "incredible capacity density" right up until your narrowboat/van is a smouldering write-off because the BMS couldn't actually interpret the cell data correctly. If you want to run repurposed cells, fit a proper standalone BMS that actually matches your pack chemistry, then talk to the Victron kit via a supported comms protocol. Done it myself with a Daly on the boat before I caved and bought proper Fogstar Drift cells. Cheaper in the long run than a fire investigation.

@48VQueen "setting themselves on fire slowly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting but she's not wrong — I run Fogstar Drift cells on my narrowboat and even those needed proper CANbus integration via a compatible BMS before my Victron kit would play nicely, and Fogstar actually wants you to succeed.

Huawei telecom cells are lovely lumps of capacity but they come from a world where the BMS talks to Huawei infrastructure, not your Cerbo GX — you're essentially trying to get a Nokia 3310 to pair with AirPods.
