M8 data cable for Lynx BMS

Been piecing together my Victron Lynx BMS setup for the boat over the past few months and I've hit a bit of a wall with cable management.

I've got a BAT512130620 LiFePO4 300Ah battery tucked away in the bow locker, and the BMS is mounted closer to the main panel — there's probably 2–2.5 metres between them. The stock M8 data cable that comes with it is nowhere near long enough to reach comfortably.

A few questions for anyone who's done this:

1. What's the maximum safe length for the M8 BMS communication cable? I've seen the Victron docs mention keeping data cables short but no specific figure jumps out at me.

2. Can you daisy-chain two extension cables together, or does that introduce signal issues? I'd rather not find out the hard way mid-season on the water.

3. Is there a recommended extension cable — does Victron sell an official one, or are people using generic M8 4-pin cables from somewhere like Amazon or RS Components? Wondering if there's a quality threshold worth paying attention to here.

The install is otherwise fairly straightforward — Cerbo GX, Multiplus-II, Lynx Distributor — so I don't want something daft like a dodgy data cable causing false BMS trips when I'm anchored somewhere off the west coast of Scotland with no signal.

Anyone dealt with this on a boat install specifically? Tight cable runs and awkward routing seem to be the norm on these older hulls.

@NicolaTaylor72 Which M8 cable length are you after? I had exactly this faff on my motorhome build — the Victron M8 data cable (ASS030560200 is the 2m one) was surprisingly hard to source locally.

Ended up getting mine through Bimble Solar but Merlin Equipment are worth checking too if you're in the UK — decent stock of Victron comms stuff.

One thing worth confirming: is your BAT512130620 the Smart variant? If it's got the built-in Bluetooth it communicates slightly differently and you might not need the physical data cable at all depending on how you're integrating with the Lynx BMS.

What else is in your system — MPPT, Multiplus? Might affect which comms approach makes most sense.

@NicolaTaylor72 The BAT512130620 uses the standard M8 circular connector for the BMS comms — same pinout as the rest of the Smart Battery range. Victron's own ASS030560100 cable is the "official" answer but it's eye-wateringly priced for what it is.

Worth checking whether you actually need the full BMS cable or just the VE.Bus connection — on a boat install the cable routing often dictates length more than anything else, and 1.8m catches people out surprisingly often.

Bimble Solar usually have the Victron accessories in stock without the usual wait, and their shipping to marine addresses has been reliable in my experience. Also double-check your Lynx BMS firmware is current before commissioning — there was a notably grumpy firmware version that caused false low-temp alarms which had everyone scratching their heads for a while.

Available direct from Bimble Solar or Victron Professional distributors if you've got a trade account. Lengths vary so measure your run before ordering — learnt that one the hard way on my narrowboat when I'd already routed everything through the bilge.

Also worth checking Marine How To on YouTube if you're unsure about the full wiring topology — saves a lot of head-scratching before you commit to cable runs in tight spaces.

@CornishNomad the M8 cable is basically the Victron equivalent of losing your keys — everything else is sorted, you're going nowhere. 😅

@NicolaTaylor72 had the same drama with my static caravan build — ended up grabbing the ASS030560200 (the 5m M8 BMS cable) direct from Bimble Solar, arrived in two days and sorted it nicely. Worth checking whether you actually need the full 5m or if the 2m will do — boats have a funny habit of making cable runs longer than you expect once you route around everything sensibly.

Worth knowing that the ASS030560200 is the official Victron M8 BMS cable if you haven't already identified it — available through Bimble Solar or Victron's UK distributor network. Some members have also had luck sourcing compatible M8 4-pin cables from industrial automation suppliers (Phoenix Contact etc.) at considerably lower cost, though obviously verify the pinout carefully before connecting anything.

One practical tip: order a spare at the same time. They have a habit of going missing during installs on boats where cable runs disappear into awkward bilge spaces.
