So I've got a situation that I reckon a few of you might have wrestled with — I've got a Victron Multiplus-II 48/3000 sitting at the heart of my garden office setup, with a decent bank of Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells behind it and an AC-coupled grid-tie inverter on the output. All tickety-boo so far.
The issue is I want to add more AC-coupled PV capacity but I'm bumping up against the factor 1.0 rule. My current solar inverter is already sized right at the limit relative to the Multiplus-II's inverter capacity.
The obvious solution seems to be paralleling a second identical Multiplus-II — but here's where it gets interesting. My existing unit has been running happily for two years, so there'll inevitably be a firmware version mismatch with whatever I buy new. Does that actually matter for parallel operation in practice? Victron's documentation gives me the usual "must be identical firmware" line but I've seen people suggest it's more nuanced than that.
A few questions for the hive mind:
- Has anyone successfully paralleled a newer unit with an older one after updating firmware?
- Is it worth the hassle, or should I just swap up to a Multiplus-II 48/5000 and sell the existing unit?
- Would a second unit even double my allowable AC-coupled capacity, or does the factor 1.0 rule work differently in a parallel configuration?
The upgrade path feels like the cleaner option but I'm loath to rip out a perfectly happy inverter if parallel is viable. Anyone been down this road?
