Been running a similar setup on my narrowboat for about eight months now — Multiplus 48/5000 paired with a Fogstar Drift 48V bank, so not identical but close enough that this topic grabbed my attention.

The 110A charge current figure on the 48/8000 is the AC-side input limit, not what actually hits the battery terminals. Once you factor in efficiency losses and the inverter/charger's internal topology, real battery-side charge current can differ noticeably depending on your configured absorption voltage and any DVCC limits you've pushed through Cerbo.

A few things worth checking if you're seeing unexpected behaviour:

  • DVCC current limit in VenusOS — this is what actually caps battery charge current system-wide when everything's talking properly via CAN-bus
  • Your BMS charge current limit (CCL) — is it broadcasting correctly? Use the VRM portal diagnostics or a direct SSH session to confirm the Multiplus is receiving that figure
  • AC input current limiter set via VEConfigure — this throttles the whole unit upstream

On my setup I initially had a mismatch between what the BMS was advertising and what Victron was accepting, which led to occasional nuisance alarms without any real fault condition.

Worth also confirming your cable sizing between the Multiplus and battery. At 48V, 110A is still significant — I'd want properly rated busbars rather than relying on the existing loom if you're doing ESS with overnight grid top-up regularly.

Interested whether others running larger 48V LiFePO4 banks in ESS mode have found DVCC actually reliable for current limiting, or whether they've had to add external constraints. My experience has been broadly positive but I suspect boat installations are simpler than

@SuffolkExplorer worth noting that the 110A charge current figure on the 48/8000 is the AC input side limit, not what the battery actually sees. Victron's own documentation is a bit murky on this — the actual DC charge current depends on your configured limits in VEConfigure.

On my static van setup I deliberately cap the charge current well below the hardware maximum anyway. The Fogstar Drift BMS will protect itself, but running consistently near its rated input ceiling shortens cycle life noticeably in my experience.

What does your Drift bank's BMS recommend as a sustained charge rate? That figure should really be dictating your VEConfigure settings, not the Multiplus nameplate.

@DucatoProject wait so what is the actual DC charge current figure then?? Because I've been scratching my head over this with my Fogstar bank too — the Drift cells have a max continuous charge rate I don't want to hammer past and I keep second-guessing what the Multiplus is actually pushing vs what VictronConnect is telling me 🙃

On my 48/5000 the numbers never quite added up when I sat down with a calculator. Ended up just setting a conservative absorption current limit in VEConfigure and calling it a day tbh

Would love an actual definitive answer before I upsize to an 8000 👀

@BayLisa the DC charge current is right there in the product name, hiding in plain sight like my tools when I actually need them 😄

On the 48/8000/110-100, that last 100 is your DC charge current — 100A at 48V. So roughly 4.8kW of charging grunt going into your bank.

@BayLisa @CornishCruiser is technically correct — the 110 in 48/8000/**110**-100 is the DC charge current in amps, giving you 5.28kW of charging at 48V nominal, though your actual pack voltage swings mean that figure varies slightly across the charge curve. The -100 is the transfer switch rating in amps AC. Configure your charge current in VEConfigure or VRM and make sure your Fogstar (or similar) BMS DVCC limit is speaking to the Multiplus properly via VE.Bus — had mine ignoring BMS requests entirely until I sorted the DVCC settings, which was a fun Tuesday afternoon I'll never get back.

@OldSailor has nailed it — worth adding that at 48V, 110A works out to roughly 5.3kW of charging capacity, which is actually quite chunky and can catch people out if their battery BMS isn't rated to handle it.

On my own setup I deliberately dial the charge current back in VE.Configure to around 80% of the BMS continuous charge rating — gives a bit of headroom and the cells seem happier for it long-term. Fogstar's documentation is reasonably clear on their max charge rates but double-check your specific BMS spec sheet rather than relying on the marketing headline figure.

Also worth remembering the 100 in the model name is the AC output current in amps — completely separate figure, easy to conflate the two if you're reading the datasheet in a hurry.
