Ran a similar 48v → 12v conversion on the shepherd's hut last summer and nearly went full Meanwell before a mate talked me off the ledge — the SD-1000L-12 is a converter, not a charger, which matters enormously if you've got a 12v leisure battery on the output side rather than just running loads directly.

The Victron Orion-Tr 48/12-30 in non-isolated form gives you proper charge profiles, BMS comms (if you're running a smart lithium), and the Victron ecosystem tie-in — which, once you're in it, you don't leave because everything just talks to everything. Two of them gets you 60A which is respectable, plus you can wire them in parallel with load-sharing and keep one as a hot spare. Genuinely elegant setup.

That said, the Meanwell is considerably cheaper and if you're purely powering 12v loads with no battery buffer, the simplicity argument is real — it's a tank, it'll outlive your grandchildren, and there's essentially nothing to configure.

Key questions worth answering before committing:

  • Are you charging a 12v battery or just running loads?
  • Do you need galvanic isolation (floating 48v system)?
  • Is Victron ecosystem integration already in play?
  • What's your continuous current draw realistically?

The dual-Orion route wins on flexibility; the Meanwell wins on cost-per-watt and robustness. Anyone here running the SD-1000L-12 in a proper RV setup with a 12v battery on the output — curious what you actually observed on voltage regulation under varying loads?

@LochLover makes a crucial point that's worth hammering home — the Meanwell won't properly bulk/absorb/float your 12v battery bank, it'll just hold a fixed output voltage. Fine if you're running pure loads directly, but your batteries will suffer long-term without proper charge profiling.

The Orion-Tr Smart units earn their premium in an RV context precisely because you can daisy-chain two in parallel and configure them via Bluetooth. That's genuinely useful when you're parked up and want to check things from the cab.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — consider your cable run length between the 48v bank and the converter location. Voltage drop calculations change significantly at these current levels, and a poorly spec'd install can negate whichever unit you choose. Worth doing the maths before committing.

For a garden office I went with a single Victron Orion-Tr 48/12-30A and it's been rock solid — the isolated version means no ground loop headaches. Two of them in parallel would give you solid redundancy though if you're worried about load spikes.

Worth noting the Orion-Trs integrate properly with Cerbo GX if you're running that, which the Meanwell obviously won't. Makes monitoring dead easy.

One thing nobody's mentioned — check your actual 12v load before sizing. Lots of RV builders overestimate and end up with overkill. Mine rarely pulls more than 15A peak. 🔋

Worth adding the practical numbers here. Two Orion-Tr 48/12-30A units gives you 60A combined — that's 720W at 12V, which comfortably covers most RV 12V loads. You can also run them in parallel with proper load sharing via the remote on/off pins.

The SD-1000L-12 will push ~83A but with zero charge profile — your 12V battery will either sit undercharged or get hammered. @Megan1996's point about isolation matters too, especially in an RV where you've got chassis grounds causing all sorts of grief.

On the shepherds hut I ran a single Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A feeding a small LiFePO4 buffer. The Bluetooth monitoring through VictronConnect is genuinely useful for fault-finding remotely.

If budget is tight, Fogstar do decent 12V LiFePO4 that pairs well with the Victron ecosystem too.

Good thread this. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — if you're going down the dual Orion-Tr route, make sure you're running them in parallel properly and check the firmware is identical on both units before pairing them. Had a nightmare on our motorhome build where mismatched firmware caused one unit to drop out intermittently under load. Took ages to diagnose.

Also worth considering the VE.Direct connectivity on the Victrons — being able to monitor both units through Victron Connect and tie them into a GX device if you go that route later is a genuine advantage the Meanwell simply can't offer. Future-proofing matters on a long-term RV install. @CrispyTrekker's numbers are solid too.

One thing worth flagging from lived experience: the Victron units talk to the rest of your system via VE.Direct, so if you're already running a Cerbo GX or similar, you get proper visibility on what's crossing between banks. The Meanwell is essentially a black box by comparison.

@LochLover is absolutely right about the converter-versus-charger distinction — learned that the hard way reading spec sheets at midnight. The Orion-Tr actually charges your 12v bank properly rather than just holding a fixed output voltage, which matters enormously for battery longevity if you're running Fogstar or similar lithium cells on the 12v side.

For an RV especially, remote on/off via the ignition feed is another Victron win.
