Really interesting to see this making its way into the Venus beta — has anyone actually got this running yet with a real HV battery stack in a UK setup?

I've been watching the Pylontech HV protocol integration with some curiosity. My current narrowboat setup is all LiFePO4 at 24V with a Victron Multiplus-II and a Cerbo GX, so I'm nowhere near the HV territory yet — but I've been quietly thinking about whether a shepherd's hut project I'm planning would benefit from going higher voltage from the off.

A few things I'm wondering about:

  • Which HV battery brands are actually confirmed compatible via this CANbus integration, beyond the obvious Pylontech units? Anyone tried anything from the likes of Dyness or CATL?
  • Is the GX CANbus port on the Cerbo sufficient or do you need a specific interface?
  • How stable is the Venus beta in practice? I'm always a bit wary of running beta firmware on anything mission-critical

The idea of proper BMS-to-inverter communication at the HV level is genuinely exciting — no more guessing whether your BMS is actually talking to the Multi properly. That's been one of my frustrations even at lower voltages with third-party batteries.

Would be good to hear from anyone who's already taken the plunge, particularly if you're running an off-grid residential or semi-permanent setup rather than just a test bench. UK grid-tie considerations presumably don't apply for most of us here, which might simplify things somewhat.

@DerekMoore89 running a Fogstar Drift stack through Victron Cerbo GX here and the CANbus integration is chef's kiss once you stop arguing with the termination resistor for three hours like I did 🔌

Genuine question though — anyone know if the HV BMS strings play nicely with the Venus beta when you've got a mix of charging sources? My setup has solar, grid, and an EV occasionally backfeeding into the caravan and the SOC reporting goes a bit... impressionist sometimes.

Worth checking your GX firmware is on the absolute latest beta build before you even try — lost a weekend to that particular rabbit hole so you don't have to.

@DerekMoore89 worth noting the Venus OS beta (v3.x branch) specifically requires the GX device to enumerate the HV BMS as a managed battery via the com.victronenergy.battery service — if your DVCC settings aren't handing charge control fully to the BMS, you'll get phantom voltage offsets that'll drive you absolutely spare at 2am wondering why your Multiplus is sulking.

Key checklist before anyone goes live:

  • DVCC → SVS disabled (let the BMS own voltage)
  • CAN profile set to "BYD HV" (counterintuitively correct for several HV stacks)
  • Cerbo GX firmware ≥2.94 minimum

Had a similar rabbit hole commissioning my own lithium stack — the documentation is technically accurate but organised like a Jackson Pollock painting.

@DerekMoore89 been watching this thread with interest. Running a Victron setup on the boat and the HV CANbus stuff has been on my radar for a while, though I've not jumped in yet — beta firmware on a live system isn't something I'm keen to risk mid-season.

One thing nobody's mentioned: the enumeration timeout behaviour matters a lot if you've got a dodgy CAN termination resistor. Had grief with exactly that on a 48V setup before anything HV was involved. Check your 120Ω termination at both ends before you blame the firmware.

Also worth double-checking which Cerbo GX hardware revision you're on — early units have had reported issues with the HV BMS polling rate under certain Venus builds. Not FUD, just something to verify before assuming it's the battery stack causing problems.

Really useful thread this, thanks @DerekMoore89 for raising it. I've got a Multi HS19 paired with a Cerbo GX here at the marina and I've been cautiously optimistic about the HV BMS CANbus integration since the beta announcements.

One thing worth mentioning that I haven't seen covered yet — if you're in a marine environment like me, make sure your CANbus termination resistors are properly seated before you go chasing any enumeration issues. Had a nightmare last winter that turned out to be nothing more than a dodgy 120Ω terminator vibrating loose. @BodgeItAndScarper might relate to that one!

Also worth checking your Venus OS regional settings are set correctly for UK grid frequency (50Hz) before commissioning — caught me out on first setup. Looking forward to hearing how others get on with live HV stacks.
