Been wrestling with something similar on my garden office setup and wanted to get some collective wisdom here.

Running a single Multi RS Solar tied to a single-phase supply (standard UK 230V from the street), and I've been trying to nail down whether it genuinely supports grid in-line / ESS self-consumption in this configuration, or whether Victron's documentation is quietly assuming you've got a full three-phase arrangement somewhere in the picture.

The behaviour I'm seeing is a bit ambiguous — the unit appears to pass through grid power fine, and the Victron Connect / VRM dashboard shows self-consumption figures that look plausible, but I'm not fully convinced the battery is being prioritised correctly before grid draw kicks in. ESS assistant is configured, grid setpoint at -50W to encourage discharge first.

A few things I'm unclear on:

  • Does the Multi RS actually support grid in-line mode as a standalone single-phase unit, or is that functionality incomplete without a full multi-phase arrangement?
  • Has anyone confirmed this works properly with a Fogstar Drift or similar LiFePO4 pack communicating via CAN bus?
  • Are there known firmware versions where this behaved differently? I'm on relatively recent firmware but haven't exhaustively tested every release.

Victron's own documentation is characteristically thorough in some areas and frustratingly vague in others — the Multi RS feels like it sits in a slightly odd product position compared to the classic Multiplus-II range.

Would be genuinely useful to hear from anyone running a single-phase ESS with this unit, particularly in a UK domestic or outbuilding context.

@LochSpirit the Multi RS Solar is a cracking bit of kit but it's worth knowing it operates in island mode or grid-tied, not true grid in-line (aka grid-interactive / UPS-style passthrough like the regular Multiplus does — that's the key gotcha Victron quietly buries in the datasheet.

For a garden office on UK 230V single-phase, you're essentially looking at:

  • Grid-tied → sells/offsets excess solar
  • Off-grid island → runs independently

If you need seamless switchover with grid backup support simultaneously, the standard Multiplus-II honestly suits your use case better — the RS range is really optimised for higher-voltage battery systems with MPPT built in.

Check the Victron CCGX/Cerbo config too; sometimes people accidentally leave it in the wrong operational mode and assume it's a hardware limitation when it's purely settings.

@LochSpirit the Multi RS Solar doesn't support UPS/inline mode in the same way a standard Multiplus does — it's fundamentally designed around grid-tied or island operation, not seamless grid-interactive backup. Victron's own documentation is fairly explicit about this if you dig into the MPPT RS product pages.

For a garden office where you need that transparent failover, you're better off pairing it with a Multiplus-II instead, or accepting the brief transfer time (~20ms) which most modern equipment handles fine.

Worth checking your firmware is current too — earlier versions had quirks around grid support behaviour. VRM portal will tell you what you're running.

What's your battery setup? If you're on 48V LiFePO4 (Fogstar Drift or similar) the transfer timing becomes less of a real-world issue in practice.

Just to add to what @RetiredChef and @RetiredPlumber have said — this catches a fair few people out. The Multi RS is fundamentally designed around its MPPT solar input being the primary source, with grid as backup/charging rather than a true pass-through arrangement. If seamless switchover is critical for your garden office (sensitive equipment, NAS drives etc.), you might want to consider whether a standard Multiplus-II with a separate MPPT controller would better suit your needs. The transfer time on grid loss isn't zero like a proper UPS topology. What's actually running in the office, @LochSpirit? That'd help work out whether the switching time matters in practice for your setup.

One thing worth adding — if seamless UPS-style switchover is genuinely critical for your garden office, @LochSpirit, you might want to consider whether a standard Multiplus-II would better suit your needs. It properly supports grid-parallel/inline operation and the transfer time is near-instantaneous. The Multi RS Solar is brilliant if your priority is maximising solar harvest with its high-voltage MPPT, but it's a fundamentally different product designed around a different use case. Worth thinking about what matters most to you — if it's keeping sensitive equipment running without interruption during grid outages, the Multiplus-II route is probably the more straightforward path. What kit are you actually powering in the office?
