Multiplus 12/1200 issues

Had something similar crop up with my setup a while back — Multiplus 12/1200 paired with a Fogstar Drift 100Ah and a basic BMS. Drove me absolutely mental for a weekend.

The issue for me was that the moment I broke the connection between the BMS and the inverter port to go into VE.Config and tweak settings, the Multiplus would just shut down flat. No warning, nothing in the VEConfigure logs that made obvious sense at the time.

Turned out my BMS was cutting load output the second it lost the "handshake" signal it expected. The Multiplus wasn't getting the green light to stay on, so it bailed.

A few things worth checking:

• Is your BMS set to allow load even when the inverter port is disconnected? Some BMS firmware is weirdly aggressive about this
• Are you using a dummy plug or keeping 12V on the bus while you configure? That made a difference for me
• VE.Bus Smart Dongle — connecting via Bluetooth rather than physically touching the wiring helped me avoid the whole issue eventually

Also worth checking if there's a firmware update for your BMS. Mine was on an older version that had some known quirks around port disconnection behaviour.

Anyone else seen this with the 12/1200 specifically? Feels like a fairly common gotcha for people first setting these systems up. Would be curious whether it's more of a BMS config issue or something quirky about how the Multiplus handles that port losing continuity.

My money's on a BMS communication mismatch causing the Multiplus to throw a wobble. Had almost exactly this scenario in my motorhome last spring — Multiplus 12/1200 kept dropping into passthrough unexpectedly, looked like an inverter fault but was actually the BMS pulling the plug on discharge protection at a threshold the Victron hadn't been configured to expect.

The fix that sorted mine: checked the low battery shutdown voltage in VictronConnect and made sure it was below the BMS cutoff, so the Multiplus gracefully reduces load before the BMS ever needs to intervene hard. Removes that brutal disconnect entirely.

Worth also checking your DC cable sizing — undersized cables cause voltage sag that looks exactly like a low-battery event to the inverter.

@MultiPlusGeek this applies double to tiny house builds with higher sustained loads.

While we wait for @SOCGal to finish that sentence 😄, I can probably fill in some gaps from my own experience with a similar pairing on my garden office setup.

The Multiplus 12/1200 has a fairly aggressive charge profile out of the box — if your BMS trips on overvoltage during absorption, the inverter sees it as a sudden load disconnect and can behave oddly. Classic symptom is it cycling on/off every few minutes.

Fix that worked for me: drop absorption voltage to around 14.2V in VE.Configure and set a proper charge current limit. Fogstar Drift is solid but the BMS will protect itself if you push it.

Also worth checking — is the BMS wired to the Multiplus via the two-signal assistant? Makes a huge difference to how gracefully it shuts down.
