Had a similar head-scratcher with my Multiplus a while back — green mains LED, bulk charging showing, inverter running, but the low battery red was lit simultaneously. Felt completely contradictory at first.

Turns out the issue was voltage drop under load. The Multiplus reads battery voltage at its own terminals, not at your busbar or distribution point. If your cable runs are even slightly undersized or your connections have any resistance, you'll see a "healthy" reading at the Link 1000 but the Multiplus is actually seeing something lower — especially once it starts pulling current.

A few things worth checking:

  • Cable sizing — 12V/3000W setup needs serious cable. Most people underestimate it. You want 70mm² minimum, ideally 95mm²
  • Connection quality — one dodgy lug can cause enough resistance to trigger low battery protection under load
  • Battery state — if it's a lead-acid bank, surface charge can read 12V at rest but sag badly under any draw
  • VE.Configure settings — your low battery cutoff and restart thresholds might just be set too conservatively

I run a Fogstar Drift lithium now and this kind of ghost reading basically disappeared once I sorted the cabling properly. With lead-acid I was constantly chasing weird voltage readings.

Worth connecting a laptop with VE.Configure and watching the actual voltage the Multiplus is seeing in real time rather than trusting a separate meter reading. That'll tell you exactly what's going on.

Anyone else had this on a 12V system specifically? Curious whether it's more common at 12V due to the higher currents involved.

@MoorCamper that exact scenario had me second-guessing my sanity for a full weekend in a lay-by outside Lewes last winter.

What eventually cracked it for me was checking the battery temperature sensor connection. The Multiplus was essentially reading phantom low voltage because the sensor had worked loose — so it was simultaneously seeing mains fine, charging fine, but also getting a garbage temperature-compensated voltage reading that triggered the low battery flag.

Worth pulling up VictronConnect and watching the actual battery voltage in real-time versus what the unit thinks it's seeing. If they diverge, your sensor wiring is suspect.

Also — what cable cross-section are you running between the Multiplus and your battery? Undersized DC cables will cause a genuine voltage drop under load that produces exactly this contradiction on the LEDs.

@MoorCamper @SussexVanLifer — worth checking your battery temperature sensor calibration if you're running a Victron BMV-712 or similar. The Multiplus uses battery voltage at the terminals for its low-battery detection, not the BMV's compensated reading. If your cable runs are undersized or connections have even marginal resistance, the inverter sees a voltage drop under load that triggers the low-battery LED whilst the BMV simultaneously reports adequate SOC.

Seen this exact scenario on my narrowboat installation — 35mm² cable that looked fine but had a corroded crimp at the positive bus. Under 2kW+ load the voltage at the Multiplus terminals was sitting 0.4V below what the BMV was reading at the battery posts. Victron's threshold for the 12/3000 is 10.8V, so marginal drops matter.

Check terminal voltages under load with a multimeter rather than relying solely on display readings.

@MoorCamper mine did exactly that last February in a field outside Aberystwyth — turned out the low battery threshold in VictronConnect was set to some optimistic fantasy number from a previous owner, triggering the red LED even while the BMV was happily reporting 80% SOC.

Check your low battery warning voltage under the Multiplus settings — I'd bet someone's set it to 12.4V or higher, which means it screams at you constantly during normal use like a hypochondriac smoke alarm.

Quick fix:

  • Open VictronConnect
  • Go to Multiplus settings
  • Drop the low battery warning to something sensible (~11.8V for lead, lower for lithium)

Took me three hours of muttering at a damp static caravan to figure that out, so you're welcome.

@MoorCamper this rings a bell from my cabin build — the Multiplus has a "low battery alarm" threshold that's completely separate from the actual charge state logic. So the unit was genuinely bulk charging and simultaneously triggering an alarm set too high.

In VEConfigure there's a dedicated low battery voltage setting under the "Inverter" tab. Mine was left at factory default, which was embarrassingly conservative for a lithium bank. Dropped it by about 0.5V and the phantom alarm vanished overnight.

Worth also checking whether you've got PowerAssist enabled — if mains current is limited, the Multiplus occasionally pulls briefly from the battery even mid-charge, which can momentarily dip voltage and trip the alarm before the charger catches up.

@MoorCamper @Slim3 is on the right track — those thresholds are configurable in VEConfigure3, under the "Inverter" tab. The Low DC shut-down and Low DC alarm voltages are independent settings, and factory defaults are often set quite conservatively (around 10.8V and 11.1V respectively for 12V systems).

What catches people out is that the alarm can trigger based on instantaneous voltage dips under load, not sustained sag. If you've got any resistance in your busbars or connections, a momentary inductive load can spike the voltage down enough to trigger the alarm even while bulk charging is occurring.

Worth checking your cable cross-section too — a 3000W inverter really wants 70mm² minimum from the battery terminals. I learnt that the hard way on my narrowboat before I upgraded the cabling.
