MultiPlus II 3-phase system struggling to connect to Perkins genset above 15kVA load

Had a similar headache last year trying to get my MultiPlus II setup playing nicely with a diesel genset — nowhere near your scale, mind you, but the same kind of "it works until it really needs to work" nonsense.

From what I've read and experienced, the MultiPlus can be very picky about generator quality. A few things worth checking:

  • UPS function — if it's enabled, the transfer timing expectations might be clashing with how the Perkins ramps up under load
  • Dynamic current limiter — worth enabling if you haven't, lets the MP2 ease into the genset rather than demanding everything at once
  • AC input current limit — have you got this set conservatively enough to let the Perkins stabilise before the system starts pulling hard?

Also curious whether your Fronius is on AC coupled output or input side — that changes things quite a bit when the genset kicks in. If it's AC output and the frequency shifting isn't dialled in right on the MP2 side, you can get some proper chaos above certain load thresholds.

What does VictronConnect show during the dropout? Any ripple on the DC bus worth mentioning?

Feels like it could be a generator AVR stability thing too — Perkins are generally solid but older units can have voltage sag that trips the MP2's protection. A proper power quality logger on the genset output would tell you a lot.

Anyone else running 3-phase MP2 arrays with large AC-coupled Fronius units? Interested what transfer limits people are actually using in practice. 🔧

Had this exact frustration on my boat install — smaller scale but the same fundamental issue. The MultiPlus II's AC input current limit and the genset's voltage droop under load were constantly fighting each other.

Few things worth checking that sorted mine:

  • Dynamic Current Limiter — enable it in VEConfigure if you haven't already. It lets the inverter back off gracefully when the genset wobbles
  • Perkins units can have quite aggressive governor response times. The MultiPlus needs the AC input to stabilise before it'll properly sync
  • Check your UPS function settings — sometimes that's what's causing the dropout behaviour

@GazAllen what's your AC input sensitivity set to? There's a "wide" input range option that helped massively on my setup when running off a lumpy genset signal. Worth playing with before assuming it's a sizing problem.

@GazAllen and @KevWatson57 both touching on something important here — the root cause on 3-phase Perkins installs is almost always the genset's AVR struggling to maintain tight voltage regulation under sudden reactive load steps.

Worth checking your AC Input Current Limit ramp rate in VEConfigure — specifically the PowerAssist settings. The MultiPlus II can be configured to absorb sudden load spikes internally before demanding current from the genset, which gives the AVR time to catch up.

Also, Perkins units often have notoriously "soft" governors at light load — if your genset is sitting below ~40% capacity before the transition hits, frequency droop can trigger the MultiPlus's protection thresholds.

Had similar (smaller scale) issues on my motorhome with a Honda EU inverter-generator until I tightened the AC input frequency acceptance window in ESS settings. The principle translates directly to your scenario.

Really interesting thread this — and @SimonKelly's point about the root cause is worth digging into further.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: PowerControl settings. On a 3-phase MultiPlus II setup, the AC input current limit needs to be set per phase in VEConfigure, and if your Perkins is producing any voltage imbalance between phases (which older Perkins units absolutely do under load), the system can get confused about what it's actually got available.

Worth logging the AC input voltage on all three phases via Venus OS during a failed handshake — you might find one phase is drooping noticeably while the others look fine.

Also check your UPS Function setting. Had a smaller-scale version of this headache on my narrowboat install and disabling UPS Function let the MultiPlus tolerate the genset's slightly scruffy waveform much better. Victron's generator compatibility docs are surprisingly thorough on the Perkins-specific quirks too.

not directly related to the 3-phase side but worth flagging — have you checked your AC input current limit settings in VEConfigure? easy to overlook on bigger installs

on my cabin setup (single phase, much smaller obv) i had the MultiPlus II basically refusing to hand off properly to my little Honda because the input current limit was set too conservatively and it kept trying to compensate rather than just... accepting the gen supply

with a Perkins at that kVA range i'd imagine the voltage and frequency stability during ramp-up is also suspect — Perkins can be a bit agricultural with their governor response on older units

might be worth datalogging the AC input quality during the handoff moment specifically. VRM portal will show you exactly where it's falling over if you've got a Cerbo GX in the mix
