Multiplus II erratic behavior during transitions

Been having some weird moments with my Multiplus II (3000/48) out in the shepherd's hut lately and wondering if others have seen similar.

Mine's paired with a Fogstar Drift 48V battery and a Victron MPPT 100/50 — nothing as beefy as a full ESS setup, but I do run it in a kind of "assist" mode when the grid hookup is available on the site.

The issue is during transitions — specifically when shore power drops or fluctuates (happens a lot here, rural Wales, dodgy supply). The Multiplus sometimes hesitates for a second or two before properly taking over from battery. Lights flicker, the mini fridge does a sad little clunk. Not the end of the world but not ideal either.

I've been through the VEConfigure settings a few times. Adjusted the AC input current limit and played with the dynamic current limiter option but can't say it's made a massive difference.

A few things I'm curious about:

  • Is this a BMS communication lag causing the hesitation, or is it more likely a Multiplus config thing?
  • Anyone running a Cerbo GX found that DVCC helps smooth this out?
  • Could weak/corroded AC input wiring on my end be making it worse?

I know the original discussion floating around involves a much larger 15kVA system with Pylontechs but I reckon the underlying behaviour is probably the same regardless of scale.

Would be good to hear from anyone who's nailed down the cause — especially if you're running off-grid or semi-off-grid rather than a full ESS grid-tied setup. Feels like there's a gap in the documentation for our kind of use case.

@VoltJohn had exact same setup last winter — Multiplus II 3kVA with a Fogstar Drift 48V.

What fixed mine was tightening up the battery communication settings in VE.Config. The DVCC settings were a bit loose and the Multiplus was second-guessing the BMS during any load spike.

Couple of things worth checking:

  • SVS/SCS/STS all enabled under DVCC
  • BMS cable seated properly (mine had worked loose)
  • Firmware on both units up to date — Fogstar pushed an update a while back that sorted some handshake issues

Also worth logging it in VRM if you aren't already. Pinpoints exactly when the erratic behaviour kicks in and what the SOC/voltage was doing at that moment.

What counts as "weird moments" for you — inverter dropping out, or something else?

@VoltJohn this rings a bell from when I first commissioned the system on my narrowboat. The Multiplus II would do this odd hesitation — almost like it was having a think — whenever it switched between inverting and passthrough.

Turned out my DC cable run was slightly too long and the voltage drop during transition was enough to confuse the BMS handshake. The Fogstar Drift is quite responsive to that sort of thing.

Worth checking your VE.Configure settings too, specifically the AC input current limit — if it's set too conservatively it can cause the unit to hunt back and forth at the crossover point.

Also, what firmware is your Multiplus II running? There was a known quirk in earlier versions around exactly this behaviour that a update sorted fairly quietly.

Worth checking your DVCC settings in VictronConnect before anything else. If "Use solar charger current limit" is ticked alongside a BMS-controlled system, you can get some odd handoff behaviour during transitions — the Multiplus briefly loses authority over charge current.

Also worth confirming your BMS comms cable is properly seated. The Fogstar Drift uses a VE.Can or VE.Bus connection depending on firmware revision, and a loose connector will cause exactly the erratic stuff you're describing — system thinks it has BMS data but it's actually stale.

Check Assistants in VEConfigure too. Any custom assistant (like a generator autostart) can interfere with AC transfer timing if the thresholds aren't set carefully.

Not guessing here — had nearly identical grief with my garden office backup setup before I realised my DVCC was misconfigured after a firmware update reset a couple of values silently.

@VoltJohn had this exact gremlin in my motorhome build last spring. After ruling out the usual suspects, turned out my CANbus cable between the Multiplus II and the Cerbo GX had a dodgy crimp on pin 2 — looked fine visually but was causing intermittent comms dropouts right at the point of transition.

Worth grabbing a cheap CANbus tester if you have one, or just recrimp both ends with fresh RJ45 connectors. Made a massive difference here.

Also — what firmware are you running on the Multiplus? There were some known transition quirks below v500 that Victron quietly patched. Check VictronConnect and update if you're behind.
