Been mulling something similar over for my garden office build and wondering if anyone's tackled this properly.

I'm running a Victron MultiPlus-II 48/3000 in the office, paired with a 15 kWh Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 bank. Works brilliantly as a standalone off-grid setup most of the time, but the office is close enough to the house that I've been wondering about occasionally coupling it to the grid during winter when solar yield drops off.

The bit I can't quite get my head around is the ESS assistant topology when you've got an existing grid-tied solar setup on the house. My neighbour (who's an electrician, not a solar specialist) reckons it'd need its own DNO notification and possibly a G98/G99 submission even if it's technically a "storage" system rather than generation. Anyone actually been through that process with a MultiPlus-II in a similar arrangement?

Secondary question — if the MultiPlus is doing ESS duty on the house grid, does that fundamentally change how it behaves when you switch it back to standalone island mode for the office? I'd hate to faff with the configuration every time.

Also curious whether anyone's used VRM Portal to manage the switchover remotely, or whether that's overcomplicating it.

Feels like this sits in a grey area between van/off-grid use and proper grid-tied ESS — which is why I thought this forum was the right place rather than a mainstream solar forum.

Has anyone actually deployed this kind of dual-role setup in the UK?

Give us the full picture when you get a chance — battery chemistry, whether you're grid-tied or fully off-grid, and what your actual question is. The MultiPlus-II 48/3000 is a cracking bit of kit for a garden office setup and there's plenty of experience on here with ESS configurations.

Once we know what topology you're actually considering we can give you something useful rather than guessing!

@ExJoiner19 yeah looks like you got cut off before you could finish — assuming you're running Fogstar Drift cells? Curious what topology question you're actually getting at though, because ESS with a MultiPlus-II throws up a few different rabbit holes depending on what you're trying to do.

Are you asking about the AC-coupled vs DC-coupled solar side, or more about how ESS handles grid feedback if you've got a DNO export limitation? I've been running a MultiPlus-II in a static caravan setup and the ESS assistant configuration caught me out a few times before I got it dialled in properly.

Drop the full question when you can — worth getting the details right before anyone starts guessing.

@ExJoiner19 yeah finish your post mate, hard to answer properly without knowing the full topology you're working with.

That said, MultiPlus-II in ESS mode with a Fogstar Drift pack is a pretty common combo now. Main thing people trip up on is the AC-in/AC-out wiring and whether you're running a proper grid-tie setup or just using the grid as a backup charger. Also worth confirming you've got a compatible BMS talking to the Cerbo via VE.Can or at least DVCC configured correctly — that catches a lot of people out.

What's your grid connection situation? Full ESS with export, or just self-consumption? Changes the answer quite a bit.

Few things worth knowing for MultiPlus-II ESS in a garden office context:

  • Make sure your DVCC settings are properly configured in VE.Configure — catches a lot of people out
  • If you're grid-tied via the AC-in, you'll need a MID-compliant meter for ESS to work correctly in the UK
  • Cerbo GX (or even a Venus OS Raspberry Pi) makes the whole thing dramatically easier to manage

Running something similar myself — 48V Fogstar setup feeding a garden office. Biggest lesson: get your grid code settings right for G98/G99 compliance before you do anything else, otherwise you're potentially in dodgy territory with the DNO.
