Been mulling over a similar setup for a project I'm consulting on — a remote highland bothy conversion that currently runs off a diesel three-phase generator with a basic UPS bolted on for the server rack and lighting circuits.

The owner wants to move toward a proper hybrid system, and I've been looking hard at whether a Multiplus II (or a trio of them in three-phase configuration) could slot in cleanly alongside the existing UPS infrastructure without causing headaches at the transfer switching stage.

The core concern I keep coming back to:

  • The existing UPS has its own transfer relay logic
  • If the Multiplus II is also managing grid/generator input priority, you can end up with two systems fighting over who controls the handover
  • Particularly messy when the generator is soft-starting under load

I've dealt with something vaguely similar on my own tiny house setup — single-phase obviously, but the principle of preventing relay conflict between a Victron CCGX-managed Multiplus and an upstream UPS still applies. The answer there was careful use of the AC input current limit settings and disabling certain assistants that were causing false triggers.

On a three-phase highland site with a rotary UPS feeding the generator input, I imagine the phase synchronisation alone adds another layer of complexity.

Has anyone here actually commissioned a Multiplus II three-phase array downstream of an existing UPS? Specifically interested in:

  1. How you handled transfer relay sequencing
  2. Whether you used the Victron VE.Bus assistants to manage priority, or went external with a PLC
  3. Any islanding detection issues with Scottish/rural DNO connections (if grid-tied at all)

@SaltyRanger interesting project. One thing worth flagging — the Multiplus II is single-phase only, so if the bothy needs to maintain three-phase distribution you'd need three units configured in a three-phase stack. Gets pricey but Victron's VE.Bus comms between them is solid.

For the UPS handover side, the Multiplus II's transfer switch is rapid enough (~20ms) that most servers won't even notice. Ran mine in the motorhome off a generator and the switchover is seamless.

Main headache in a highland location will be battery temp management in winter — LiFePO4 won't charge below 0°C without a heated setup. Worth factoring that in early rather than retrofitting later.

@RobJones85 makes a fair point about the single-phase limitation, but worth noting Victron do offer the Quattro range if you need more input flexibility — though that still won't give you native three-phase output from a single unit.

For actual three-phase, you'd need three Multiplus II units configured in a three-phase stack via VE.Bus. Done it on a narrowboat club's shore-power setup — works well but the configuration in VEConfigure is fiddly and you must get the phase rotation right or you'll have a bad day.

The UPS integration side is the bit I'd scrutinise harder though. What's the existing UPS topology? If it's a basic offline unit the transfer time might cause the Victron to see a supply dropout and do something unpleasant. Worth mapping that out before committing.

@DODGuy is right that the Quattro is worth considering, but neither unit natively handles three-phase generation integration without careful thought about phase synchronisation. The real question here is what loads actually need three-phase — industrial motors, certain pumps, etc. — versus what can be split off to single-phase circuits.

For a bothy conversion specifically, I'd be looking at whether the three-phase generator is genuinely necessary long-term, or whether it's just legacy infrastructure. If the heavy three-phase loads are minimal, a phased approach (no pun intended) of isolating single-phase critical loads onto a Multiplus II or Quattro with battery storage makes considerably more sense than trying to engineer around the generator's three-phase output.

What's the actual load profile look like? Peak draw, continuous baseline, which loads are genuinely three-phase dependent?

@Squib82 honestly at this point the thread reads like a relay race where everyone passes the baton without actually crossing the finish line — three Quattros in a master/slave three-phase config via VE.Bus is your answer, been running a similar lash-up out at my shepherds hut (minus the highland drama) and the Victron ESS assistant handles the generator handoff without breaking a sweat, just make sure your genset does a clean sine wave or the Multiplus family throws a wobbler on AC-in sensing.
