Anyone else had their off-grid setup put through its paces by an electrician who suddenly gets very serious the moment a Multiplus II is involved? 😄
Had a spark round last month to look at my static caravan setup — twin Multiplus II 5000s running in parallel, fed from a fairly chunky DC bus. Everything's been rock solid for two years but I wanted it properly signed off, mostly for insurance reasons.
The moment he clocked the Victron kit he went quiet and started muttering about protective earth arrangements and how the neutral switching behaves when you're fully islanded. Fair point actually — the Multiplus II does some interesting things with neutral-earth bonding depending on whether you're on grid, off grid, or mid-transfer. Caught me out when I first set it up too.
Main sticking points he flagged:
- RCD discrimination — making sure the downstream RCDs in the caravan actually coordinate properly given the inverter's output characteristics
- Earth fault loop impedance — different beast entirely when your "source" is a pair of inverters rather than the DNO
- Labelling — apparently mine was "creative" 🙃
Took a bit of back-and-forth with the Victron installation manual and some VEConfigure faffing to get everything documented to his satisfaction.
Curious whether anyone's had a formal electrical installation inspection done on a Victron-based off-grid system in the UK — particularly tiny house or static van setups where the install is a bit unconventional. Did your sparky actually understand what they were looking at, or was there a lot of... educating?
