Anyone else had their off-grid setup put through its paces by an electrician who suddenly gets very serious the moment a Multiplus II is involved? 😄

Had a spark round last month to look at my static caravan setup — twin Multiplus II 5000s running in parallel, fed from a fairly chunky DC bus. Everything's been rock solid for two years but I wanted it properly signed off, mostly for insurance reasons.

The moment he clocked the Victron kit he went quiet and started muttering about protective earth arrangements and how the neutral switching behaves when you're fully islanded. Fair point actually — the Multiplus II does some interesting things with neutral-earth bonding depending on whether you're on grid, off grid, or mid-transfer. Caught me out when I first set it up too.

Main sticking points he flagged:

  • RCD discrimination — making sure the downstream RCDs in the caravan actually coordinate properly given the inverter's output characteristics
  • Earth fault loop impedance — different beast entirely when your "source" is a pair of inverters rather than the DNO
  • Labelling — apparently mine was "creative" 🙃

Took a bit of back-and-forth with the Victron installation manual and some VEConfigure faffing to get everything documented to his satisfaction.

Curious whether anyone's had a formal electrical installation inspection done on a Victron-based off-grid system in the UK — particularly tiny house or static van setups where the install is a bit unconventional. Did your sparky actually understand what they were looking at, or was there a lot of... educating?

@DustyCaptain VDE 0100-410 is the German equivalent of our BS 7671 Part 4 Chapter 41 — your sparky's just seen "VDE" on the Victron docs and had a minor existential crisis because it's not a G99/G98 form he recognises.

The Multiplus II is CE marked and complies with the relevant LVD/EMC directives, so for a static off-grid install not connected to DNO supply, you're largely in BS 7671 territory anyway — specifically the disconnection times and touch voltage limits under 411.3.

The shock protection is handled by the inverter's earth fault detection and RCD protection downstream. Make sure your TN-S or TT earthing arrangement is solid and document it properly — a confused sparky becomes a very unhappy sparky when there's no paperwork trail.

Mine took one look at my setup and immediately wanted a cup of tea and a sit down.

@DustyCaptain yeah sparks love to go full deer-in-headlights when they see Victron docs 😄

The VDE stuff on the Multiplus II is just Victron's German certification — means nothing scary for a UK install. Your sparky needs to be looking at BS 7671 and whether your earthing arrangement is sorted properly (TT most likely on a static). That's the actual relevant bit.

Had the same faff with mine on the caravan. Once I pointed him at the Victron install manual section on earthing relay and explained the neutral switching, he calmed right down.

Main thing to check is your RCD protection is correct for TT and the earth spike is decent. Rest is fairly straightforward.

@DustyCaptain going through something similar on my boat at the moment — had a marine electrician give the Multiplus II a very suspicious look before admitting he'd never actually seen one installed properly in a leisure craft context.

What's the practical outcome for you — did your sparky eventually sign it off or is it still in limbo? Wondering whether the VDE documentation is causing the actual holdup or whether it's more that he's unsure how BS 7671 maps across to it in an off-grid context?

Also curious whether you're on a static or a vehicle/vessel — I imagine the regs your sparky's referencing might differ quite a bit from my situation where the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Installations on Boats is muddying the waters further.

@DustyCaptain worth being precise here — VDE 0100-410 and BS 7671 Chapter 41 are parallel standards, not identical. Both implement IEC 60364-4-41, but there are differences in how they're applied nationally.

The Multiplus II is CE marked and ships with documentation covering multiple regional standards simultaneously, which is why the paperwork looks overwhelming at first glance.

For a UK static installation your sparky should actually be working to BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, not VDE. The VDE reference in Victron's docs is relevant to their German certification pathway — it shouldn't be causing confusion about what you need to comply with on a UK site.

Had exactly this with my shepherd's hut install. Once I pointed the electrician toward Victron's UK-specific installation notes rather than the full technical manual, things moved along considerably faster.
