Interesting timing on this thread — I've just been looking at the MultiRS 6000 for a garden office build and this firmware behaviour is something I hadn't considered at all.

From what I understand, the 1.30 update changed how the unit handles excess solar, potentially pushing it back to the grid even in setups where that wasn't intended. For those of us running genuinely off-grid (no DNO agreement, no export licence), that's a serious concern rather than a nice feature.

A few questions for anyone who's already seen this in action:

  • Is the export behaviour the default after upgrading, or does it require a specific setting to be enabled?
  • Can it be disabled cleanly through VictronConnect or do you need VE.Configure/DVCC adjustments?
  • Does it affect standalone single-unit installs or mainly multi-unit/three-phase setups like the original scenario?

My planned setup is a single MultiRS with around 2kWp of panels feeding a garden office — completely islanded, no grid connection whatsoever. Mostly concerned whether upgrading firmware down the line could cause unexpected behaviour if I ever add a Solaredge or similar string inverter as a second source.

Anyone running a hybrid setup on UK firmware who's tested this post-1.30? Would be good to know if Victron have acknowledged it as a bug or whether they're treating it as intentional functionality that just needs configuring correctly.

@GeorgeJohnson83 worth being crystal clear on this before you commit — the MultiRS's integrated MPPT means solar export behaviour is tied directly to firmware rather than a separate controller you can configure independently. Since v1.30, if the batteries are full and loads are low, excess PV will find its way to the grid if you're connected. For a garden office that's probably grid-tied as backup, that could trigger your DNO's G98/G99 requirements depending on export levels — not something you want to discover after installation!

If the office is genuinely islanded, obviously irrelevant. But double-check your intended topology before assuming you're exempt. Victron's community forum has a decent changelog breakdown. The MultiRS is a cracking unit otherwise — I'd still recommend it — just go in with eyes open on the grid interaction side.

@GeorgeJohnson83 just to add some practical context — had a similar situation when I set up my own solar array. The export behaviour post-1.30 isn't just a firmware quirk, it's got real implications if you're on a G98/G99 notified install or if your DNO has any restrictions baked into your connection agreement.

Worth pulling your actual connection agreement out before you commit to the MultiRS. Some DNOs are funny about inverters they haven't explicitly approved, let alone ones that changed export behaviour mid-lifecycle via firmware.

If the garden office is purely off-grid with no grid connection at all, obviously none of that applies and you're laughing. But if you're running a hybrid setup with grid backup, I'd have that conversation with your DNO first rather than retrofitting paperwork later.

@GeorgeJohnson83 worth knowing that the MultiRS sits in a slightly odd position regulatory-wise for a garden office — it's a single-unit inverter-charger-MPPT combo, which Victron have essentially aimed at space-constrained installs, but that integration is exactly what makes the export behaviour more complex to control.

If your office is on a sub-meter off the main property DNO connection, any inadvertent export upstream becomes your problem with the DNO, not Victron's. ESC Rule 14 compliance doesn't disappear just because it's firmware-triggered rather than intentional.

I'd seriously look at whether a Cerbo GX with ESS properly configured gives you tighter control over that export threshold before committing to the MultiRS. The firmware maturity on ESS is considerably more battle-tested at this point.

Running a similar setup in my garden office — the grid-tie interactions are genuinely the fiddliest bit to get right.

@GeorgeJohnson83 one thing worth flagging that nobody's mentioned yet — if your garden office is on a separate DNO connection or sub-metered supply, you'll want to confirm with your DNO whether they even need to know about the export capability before you go live. Some are relaxed about incidental export at these power levels, others aren't. Also worth checking whether your G98/G99 obligations fall on you or your installer, because that can vary depending on how the install is scoped. The MultiRS is a cracking bit of kit for a garden office build, but the regulatory side can catch people out if they've been focused purely on the technical setup. Victron's own documentation is a bit thin on this specific scenario in my experience.
