Necessity of VICTRON GX device

So this came up in another corner of the internet recently and it got me thinking about my own shepherd's hut setup, where I've got a MultiPlus-II 48/3000 paired with a SmartSolar MPPT humming away quite happily.

The question that keeps surfacing is: do you actually need a GX device?

Short answer — no, not strictly. The MultiPlus-II has a built-in VE.Bus interface, and the SmartSolar talks over VE.Direct. You can monitor both individually through the Victron Connect app over Bluetooth without spending another £150-odd on a Cerbo GX. Everything works.

But here's where I went down the rabbit hole.

The moment you want:

  • Proper state-of-charge tracking across the whole system
  • ESS or generator control logic
  • Remote monitoring via VRM portal (genuinely brilliant for emergency backup peace of mind)
  • Your MPPT and inverter actually talking to each other in any coordinated way

...suddenly the GX device stops looking like a luxury and starts looking like the sensible bit of kit that ties everything together. Mine paid for itself in diagnostic time alone during a particularly grim November.

Now I'm curious — those of you running Gobel or similar lithium packs, are you relying on the battery's own BMS comms through the GX, or just letting the MPPT do its thing independently?

Because I suspect a fair few people install everything, it appears to work, and they never realise the system isn't fully integrated until something goes sideways on a cold February night. Which is, shall we say, suboptimal.

What's everyone's actual experience been?

@CopperWelder the GX device is basically just Victron charging you £200 to watch your own electricity — a Raspberry Pi running Venus OS does the same job for the price of a posh sandwich.

@PhilJackson that's a wildly reductive take, and I say that as someone who spent six months running my tiny house system without one.

The GX device isn't just monitoring — it's the communication backbone between components. Without it, your MultiPlus-II and SmartSolar aren't properly coordinating charge strategies; they're essentially operating as polite strangers at a party.

What actually matters:

  • DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) requires a GX device to function properly across your system
  • VE.Bus and VE.Direct devices need something orchestrating the conversation
  • Proper BMS integration for lithium setups becomes genuinely fraught without it

A Raspberry Pi running Venus OS is absolutely a legitimate alternative — I run a Raspberry Pi 4 in my own setup now — but dismissing the functionality because you dislike the price is a different argument entirely.

@CopperWelder what BMS are you running with that 48V bank?

@DriftGal is right to push back on that. The GX device earns its keep the moment you want grid-tie assist, ESS scheduling, or generator autostart — none of that works properly through VE.Direct alone on a MultiPlus-II. I ran my shepherd's hut for eight months thinking I didn't need one, then spent a deeply unglamorous afternoon discovering that without a Cerbo GX I couldn't implement proper load-shifting to dodge the peak tariff window.

That said, @PhilJackson isn't entirely wrong on the monitoring angle — if your setup is genuinely static (fixed absorption voltage, no ESS, no grid feed-in), a Venus OS on a Raspberry Pi does the job for about £40 in hardware.

The real question for @CopperWelder is: are you on a grid-tied tariff like Octopus Flux? Because that changes the calculus entirely.

Really interesting thread — I'm weighing up the exact same decision for my boat build.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: remote monitoring via VRM Portal. When I'm away from the boat for weeks at a time, being able to check state of charge, fault codes, and charge history from my phone seems genuinely worth the entry price — especially paired with Fogstar Drift cells where early fault detection matters.

@PhilJackson the Raspberry Pi route with Venus OS is tempting, but does it give you the same reliability in a damp, vibration-prone marine environment? I'd be nervous about SD card corruption mid-winter.

Has anyone actually done a direct comparison of the Cerbo GX versus a hardened Pi install on a boat specifically? Curious whether the hardware robustness justifies the price gap there.

Worth adding — if you're already running Victron kit, the Venus OS on a Raspberry Pi route is genuinely solid and costs a fraction of a Cerbo GX. I ran that on my cabin setup for about 18 months before eventually caving and getting a proper GX Touch.

Does everything the Cerbo does for monitoring and ESS, just needs a bit more fiddling to set up. Plenty of guides on the Victron Community forum.

Only reason I moved on was wanting something more reliable long-term — the Pi felt a bit fragile for a permanent install off-grid. But for a boat build like @ExpertConvert is considering, might be worth a look before spending £200+ on official hardware.
