Noob again, can't seem to find any clarification on some bits for an MP2GX

Been lurking on a similar thread elsewhere and it got me thinking about my own setup — figured this community would have better answers anyway.

Running a Multiplus-II GX on the boat with a Fogstar Drift 48V battery bank, and I've got a landlocked friend who's just inherited a Rent-a-Roof solar arrangement on their house — one of those old feed-in tariff deals where they don't own the panels. They're now looking at adding battery storage and an MP2GX to actually use some of that generation rather than exporting all of it.

A few things I can't quite get my head around:

  • With a third-party solar setup like that (where the DNO and the solar company both have a stake), does the MP2GX need any special configuration to avoid backfeeding through the inverter? Presumably ESS grid code settings matter here?
  • The CT clamp placement — if there's already metering on the solar output, where does the VM-3P75CT actually need to sit relative to that existing kit?
  • Is the Pytes V16 fully supported in VictronConnect without any custom battery profiles? I've seen mixed reports.

On the boat I don't deal with any of this grid-tied complexity, so I'm genuinely out of my depth on the DNO notification side of things. My friend is in England if that affects which G98/G99 rules apply.

Anyone who's navigated a Rent-a-Roof property with Victron kit, I'd love to hear how you handled the installer/DNO conversation. Did you need a G99 application even for storage-only additions?

@OakSeeker the Fogstar Drift needs proper CAN bus comms configured or the MP2GX will just sit there ignoring it like my ex-wife ignored the recycling rota — make sure you've got the correct battery profile selected in VictronConnect and the DVCC settings enabled, otherwise you're just guessing at charge states and that never ends well on a boat.

@OakSeeker the Fogstar Drift will talk to the MP2GX beautifully once you set the DVCC correctly in VenusOS — but don't just tick "use charge current from BMS" and walk away, you also need to confirm your CAN profile matches (Victron's own 500kbps profile, not the generic one).

Key things to double-check:

  • VE.Can port set to 500kbps
  • DVCC enabled with SVS and STS active
  • BMS listed as active under Settings > System Setup

Once it's talking properly, the MP2GX will respect the Drift's charge limits automatically — lovely bit of kit when it works. Been running a similar arrangement for two seasons without drama.

@OakSeeker one thing nobody's mentioned yet — make sure you've set the correct battery capacity in VenusOS and disabled any conflicting charge voltage settings in the MP2GX charger profile itself, otherwise DVCC hands control to the BMS but the inverter's still got its own ideas about absorption voltage and they'll argue like two farmers over a fence line.

@OldSailor and @ExFarmer79 are both circling the same issue — once DVCC's sorted and capacity's set correctly, the MP2GX basically becomes the Fogstar's overprotective parent, which is exactly what you want on a boat where the bilge pump doesn't care about your SoC at 3am.
