Bit of an odd one posting this in the motorhome section since it's more of a static setup, but figured there's enough crossover knowledge here to make it worth it.
Been thinking about doing something similar on the boat — adding a dedicated 24V bank (probably 200Ah to start, Fogstar Drift cells are tempting) specifically for evening draw rather than just leaning on whatever the solar's scraped together during the day. Essentially separating the "generation and export" side from the "daily use" side, which is what it sounds like that French thread was getting at.
The bit I keep going back and forth on:
- Do you keep it as one combined bank and let the BMS handle priority charging?
- Or physically separate banks with a DC-DC charger in between?
On the garden office I've gone combined with a Victron SmartSolar and it works fine, but the boat's more complicated because I've also got shore power and an alternator in the mix.
Anyone here running a split bank setup where one bank is basically dedicated to off-peak self-consumption? Curious how you've wired the charge priority — whether you're using Victron's ESS assistant or something more manual.
Also wondering if the 24V vs 48V decision matters much at this scale. For under 500Ah I'd probably stick with 24V just to keep the inverter options sensible, but open to being told I'm wrong.
