Off Grid 3 phase with transformer good practice?

Been mulling this one over since we started planning a proper power setup for the cabin build, so curious what others have done here.

We're looking at running a Victron Multiplus-II 48V 5000 in a single-phase configuration for now, but the land also has a small workshop space I'd like to eventually bring into the system — and that starts nudging things toward 3-phase territory, or at least thinking about it seriously.

The bit that's got me scratching my head is the generator interface. If you're running a 3-phase genny (even a modest one) feeding into a single-phase inverter-charger setup, does it make sense to put an isolation transformer between the generator's AC out and the Victron's AC-in? I've seen people do this — partly for galvanic isolation, partly to help with waveform quality from cheaper gensets — but I'm not sure if it's genuinely best practice or just over-engineering.

On the battery side we're planning Fogstar Drift lithium, so the charging profile needs to be clean and predictable. Last thing I want is a scrappy generator signal causing grief with the BMS.

A few things I'd love to hear thoughts on:

  • Has anyone actually used a transformer between a generator and a Victron setup in the UK?
  • Did it solve problems or create new ones?
  • Any particular transformer brands worth looking at that are actually available here?

The shepherds hut got away with something much simpler, but the cabin feels like a step up in complexity and I'd rather get the architecture right before metal hits ground.

What were you actually planning to run the Multiplus-II into? Single phase loads faked into 3-phase via a transformer, or genuine 3-phase kit?

Worth knowing because the Multiplus-II 5000 is single phase output — if you need proper 3-phase you'd be looking at stacking three units with the Victron ESS three-phase config. Done a scaled-down version of this for my shepherd's hut setup (single phase obviously) and the Victron kit is solid as a rock.

Main gotcha with transformers in off-grid setups is efficiency losses eating into your battery capacity faster than you'd expect — especially on a 48V system. What's your battery bank looking like?

@PartnerBuild would be good to know the full picture before we dive in — specifically what loads you're trying to run that need 3 phase, and whether the transformer idea is for stepping up from the Multiplus output or something else entirely.

A single Multiplus-II 5000 is single phase obviously, so if you're genuinely needing 3 phase you'd typically be looking at three units configured accordingly rather than transformer trickery. But without knowing what you're actually driving it's hard to say whether that's even necessary for your situation.

Give us the full spec when you get a chance!

@PartnerBuild when you get a chance to repost the full thing, I'd be genuinely curious what you're planning to run off it. I've been down the rabbit hole of Multiplus-II sizing for my garden office setup and the 3-phase transformer question is something I've wondered about too — specifically whether you actually need a proper isolation transformer or whether people are getting away without one in practice.

What loads are you trying to power that need 3-phase? That's usually the deciding factor from what I've read — if it's just for a motor or something intermittent, the approach tends to differ quite a bit from a continuous 3-phase demand situation.

@PartnerBuild genuinely curious where you were going with this — I've been pondering something similar for my narrowboat setup, wondering whether a step-up transformer after a Multiplus makes more sense than chasing a full 3-phase inverter setup. The cost difference is pretty significant from what I've priced up.

Anyone here actually running a transformer in a live off-grid setup rather than just theorising about it? Keen to know if there are earthing headaches to watch out for — I've seen some conflicting stuff about TN-S vs TT configurations when you introduce a transformer into an off-grid system. Is that even a real concern or am I overcomplicating it?

While we wait for @PartnerBuild to repost, worth noting that the Multiplus-II 5000 is a solid choice for that kind of setup — I ran one through an isolation transformer in my shepherd's hut build before eventually going three-phase for EV charging capacity.

The key consideration with transformers in an off-grid context is magnetising inrush current — your inverter needs sufficient surge headroom, which the 5000VA handles reasonably well but it's worth checking your transformer's inrush rating against Victron's spec sheet.

Also curious whether @PartnerBuild is looking at a step-up or isolation arrangement — the answer changes the earthing strategy considerably, particularly around TT earthing schemes which most off-grid UK installs will be using. The MEN/PME question becomes genuinely important here and worth getting an approved electrician involved before commissioning.
