Been running a Victron MultiPlus in my shepherd's hut for about 18 months now and recently added a second array for the garden office. Got me thinking about this whole low voltage MPPT situation more carefully.

My setup is 24v nominal but I've got panels that can push a fairly high Voc in cold weather — caught 41v open circuit on a frosty morning last week. The Victron SmartSolar handles it fine because I sized the MPPT properly from the start, but I've seen people pair inverters with budget MPPTs that have really tight input windows and then wonder why they're losing harvest on cold clear days.

The thing that catches folk out is the inverter's low voltage cutoff interacting with a poorly matched MPPT. If your batteries dip and the MPPT isn't compensating quickly enough, the inverter trips before the charger can recover the bank. Had this exact issue with a mate's Renogy-based setup in Wales — took us ages to diagnose.

Few things worth considering:

  • MPPT input voltage range matters as much as wattage rating
  • Check your inverter's low battery reconnect voltage and make sure it's realistic for your bank
  • Fogstar Drift cells have pretty flat discharge curves which helps, but you still need the charger to keep up

Anyone running a hybrid inverter-charger with a separate MPPT controller? Curious whether you're seeing any communication issues between the two units or if you've kept it all within one ecosystem. Victron's VE.Direct works a treat but I imagine mixing brands gets messy fast.

What's everyone else using for lower budget builds?

Hey @WillWebb, interesting setup! One thing worth considering with lower voltage MPPT inputs is how your array configuration affects things during partial shading or overcast days - which let's be honest, we get plenty of here!

With a second array for the garden office, have you thought about keeping them on separate MPPT controllers rather than combining inputs? Mixing arrays with potentially different orientations or shading profiles on a single MPPT can really drag efficiency down. Each array essentially pulls the other's operating point away from its true peak.

What's the orientation on the new garden office array compared to the original? If they're facing different directions you'd almost certainly benefit from independent tracking. The Victron SmartSolar range plays nicely with the MultiPlus via VE.Can if you want proper integration without compromising either array's performance.

@WillWebb having a shepherd's hut and a garden office is basically just collecting reasons to buy more Victron kit.

On the low voltage MPPT point — worth knowing that Victron's SmartSolar range handles array configurations down to around 70V input on the smaller units, which gives you more flexibility wiring panels in parallel rather than series if shading's an issue. The 75/15 is brilliant for tight setups. Also check your MultiPlus firmware is current; older versions can get twitchy coordinating with MPPT via VE.Direct when voltages dip on grey winter days (and in the UK, that's basically November through March). If you're on a 24V system, the sweet spot for a second array feed is keeping your MPPT VOC comfortably above battery voltage plus a sensible margin — the Victron MPPT calculator tool does the heavy lifting there.

@MarineGeoff you're not wrong, that's basically how it starts 😄

@WillWebb curious what battery voltage you're running — 12V, 24V or 48V? That makes a big difference to which MPPT you'd want pairing with the MultiPlus. I'm on 48V in my tiny house with a Victron SmartSolar 150/45 and it handles the lower-light UK days reasonably well, but I did have to rethink my string configuration when I added a second array.

Also worth asking — are you planning to keep the garden office as a separate system entirely or tie it back into the same battery bank? I've been mulling something similar for EV charging and the wiring runs become a real consideration once you're spanning two buildings.

@WillWebb the battery voltage question from @CarolThomas79 is worth answering before going too far down the MPPT rabbit hole, because it changes everything. If you're on 12V you'll hit current limits pretty quickly as your array grows — a 60A MPPT controller sounds generous until you realise that's only 720W on a 12V bank. Moving to 24V effectively doubles your headroom without changing the controller.

What MPPT are you actually pairing with the MultiPlus? The SmartSolar range plays nicely with the Victron ecosystem obviously, but the low voltage input threshold varies between models and can catch people out in winter when panels are cold and Voc spikes.
