Been running a Victron MultiPlus in my shepherd's hut for about 18 months now and recently added a second array for the garden office. Got me thinking about this whole low voltage MPPT situation more carefully.
My setup is 24v nominal but I've got panels that can push a fairly high Voc in cold weather — caught 41v open circuit on a frosty morning last week. The Victron SmartSolar handles it fine because I sized the MPPT properly from the start, but I've seen people pair inverters with budget MPPTs that have really tight input windows and then wonder why they're losing harvest on cold clear days.
The thing that catches folk out is the inverter's low voltage cutoff interacting with a poorly matched MPPT. If your batteries dip and the MPPT isn't compensating quickly enough, the inverter trips before the charger can recover the bank. Had this exact issue with a mate's Renogy-based setup in Wales — took us ages to diagnose.
Few things worth considering:
- MPPT input voltage range matters as much as wattage rating
- Check your inverter's low battery reconnect voltage and make sure it's realistic for your bank
- Fogstar Drift cells have pretty flat discharge curves which helps, but you still need the charger to keep up
Anyone running a hybrid inverter-charger with a separate MPPT controller? Curious whether you're seeing any communication issues between the two units or if you've kept it all within one ecosystem. Victron's VE.Direct works a treat but I imagine mixing brands gets messy fast.
