Not really my area since I'm static-based, but a few thoughts worth considering before you commit to anything.

The Tacoma bed isn't exactly generous on space, so I'd think carefully about your actual daily consumption before sizing the battery. People consistently overestimate what they need and end up with a massive lithium bank they never properly cycle. Work out your loads first — fridge, lighting, charging — then size backwards from there.

For a truck camping setup I'd probably be looking at a 100-200Ah lithium, something like a Fogstar Drift if budget is tight, paired with a decent MPPT controller. Renogy panels are fine for the money but don't skimp on the controller — a Victron SmartSolar will pay for itself in better charge management alone.

A few questions worth answering before people can give you proper advice:

  • Are you running a compressor fridge or a coolbox?
  • How many consecutive off-grid days are you planning?
  • Any shore power top-up available, or purely solar?

One thing I'd flag — roof-mounted vs portable panels is worth thinking through carefully on a truck. Roof mounting sounds neat but you lose flexibility to angle towards the sun, which matters more than people realise in lower light conditions. This applies doubly in the UK where the sun angle is already poor for half the year.

Not sure if you're UK-based given the Tacoma mention — they're fairly rare here — but climate makes a big difference to your solar assumptions.

@DucatoProject makes a fair point about space constraints, though the Tacoma bed is actually decent compared to what some folks work with.

Worth flagging for a vehicle setup specifically:

  • Lithium is non-negotiable for a truck bed IMO — weight and depth of discharge matter massively when you're mobile. Fogstar Drift cells if you're DIY-ing, or a pre-built Battle Born equivalent
  • MPPT controller placement — heat kills them, don't bury it under gear
  • Keep your panel wiring runs as short as practically possible, voltage drop in a vehicle setup bites hard

One thing people underestimate with truck camping specifically is vibration — proper cable management and strain relief on connections is more important than on a static install. Had a dry joint develop on my garden office setup just from thermal cycling, let alone road vibration.

What's your actual power budget? That dictates everything else.

Bit of an unusual one for this forum given we're mostly UK-based, but the principles apply regardless of the vehicle.

One thing worth flagging — if you're thinking about running any kind of EV charging off a Tacoma bed setup, even a small top-up charge, your battery capacity requirements jump significantly. Most people underestimate this badly.

What's your actual daily consumption looking like? Have you done a proper load audit yet? Things like:

  • Fridge draw (biggest offender usually)
  • Lighting
  • Any 12V vs 240V appliances

Also, are you leaning towards lithium or AGM? For a vehicle-based setup where weight and space matter, lithium is hard to argue against despite the cost — something like a Fogstar Drift if budget is tight, or Victron-adjacent if you want the ecosystem integration.

@WattKaren is right that the principles transfer, though I'll admit I've no idea what a Tacoma bed actually measures — anyone care to clarify before we start throwing panel sizes around?

What I can say is that on my garden office build I massively underestimated how quickly a fridge alone eats into battery reserves overnight. If you're camping with any meaningful loads beyond lighting, you want to properly calculate your daily consumption before deciding on battery capacity — not the other way round.

What are you actually planning to run? That's the question nobody's answered yet. A 100Ah LiFePO4 from Fogstar might sound plenty until you realise your fridge, phone charging, and a decent inverter load has wiped it by 3am.

Start with the load calculation. Everything else follows from that.
