@Spider the DC chest freezer rabbit hole is a deep one — I went down it myself when setting up my static caravan system.

One thing worth flagging that doesn't get mentioned enough: lid seal degradation is your silent efficiency killer on chest units. I'm running a Во компания unit and noticed consumption creeping up over summer — turned out the original seal had softened in the heat and was letting warm air ingress constantly.

Worth doing a simple torch test periodically: close the lid on a lit torch in a darkened space and check for light bleeding. Sounds rudimentary but it's genuinely the quickest diagnostic.

Also on my Victron setup I can see the compressor cycle data via Cerbo — watching duty cycle percentage tells you a lot about insulation performance before your battery state-of-charge gives you any real warning.

Running a Dometic CFX3 in the motorhome and the difference vs a converted AC unit is night and day. Proper DC compressor, draws maybe 30-40Wh actual average once it's cold-soaked — my Victron BMV logs don't lie.

The bit people miss is insulation thickness. A quality DC chest freezer has noticeably more foam than the equivalent fridge-freezer from Currys. That's where half the efficiency comes from, before the compressor even enters the equation.

One thing worth flagging for remote/energy-scarce use specifically — thermal mass matters. Keep it full, even if it's just frozen water bottles. Empty space is wasted cold.

What temps are people actually hitting in summer? Mine struggles a bit when the van's parked in direct sun all afternoon, ambient inside gets brutal.

Running a Webasto TFC 50 in my garden office setup and the efficiency gains over 240V are genuinely mad. My Victron MPPT barely notices it's there compared to what the old fridge used to do.

One thing nobody mentions though — lid orientation matters more than people think. Cold air literally falls out of a chest style when you open it, so you're not losing your cool (pun absolutely intended 😄) every time you grab the frozen peas.

For anyone in genuinely remote areas with limited generation capacity, the DC chest style really is the only sensible answer. The parasitic draw savings over a year add up to serious panel-hours that could go towards... I dunno, charging an EV perhaps 👀
