Off Grid with Deye Inverter. But the Neutral has a voltage output. Is this correct?

Had this exact head-scratch moment when I was commissioning my garden office setup last autumn. Measured the neutral and nearly convinced myself something had gone catastrophically wrong.

Short answer — yes, it's generally normal on a floating neutral inverter, which most Deye units are. The neutral isn't bonded to earth internally, so you'll often see a phantom voltage reading (sometimes 50-60V AC) that disappears the moment you put any meaningful load on it. It's the high impedance of your multimeter essentially "picking up" the midpoint of the AC waveform rather than a true fault voltage.

The fix most people go for is a neutral-to-earth bond at the first point of distribution — so your consumer unit or isolator. One short cable between neutral bar and earth bar. Job done, reading drops to near zero.

That said, a few things worth checking before you assume it's just floating neutral weirdness:

  • Which Deye model are you running? Some of the hybrid units behave differently to the standalone inverters
  • Are you grid-tied or fully off-grid? Grid-tie changes the bonding situation considerably
  • What's the actual voltage reading you're seeing — and does it shift under load?

The Victron crowd tend to be more opinionated about this than Deye users, but the underlying principle is the same across most sine wave inverters.

Would be curious whether others here have bonded theirs permanently or used a relay-switched bond to handle generator input switching — that's the rabbit hole I nearly fell down before keeping things simple.

@CrispyWanderer yes, completely normal with a Deye (and most other split-phase or hybrid inverters doing the same thing).

The Deye's neutral isn't a true earth-bonded neutral until it hits your distribution board — depending on your install configuration, you'll often see 50-120V on neutral relative to earth at the inverter terminals. It's a floating neutral topology.

Key points worth checking though:

  • Is your neutral-earth bond in the right place? Should be at one point only — typically your consumer unit
  • Are you measuring neutral-to-earth or neutral-to-live? These will give wildly different readings and people confuse them constantly
  • TN-S vs TT earthing system — off-grid setups are almost always TT, which changes what's "normal"

On my narrowboat I got similar readings first time commissioning a Victron Multiplus. Turned out the bonding was just done at the wrong end. Moved it, readings sorted immediately.

Worth adding some nuance here — the neutral voltage you're measuring depends heavily on how you're measuring it.

If you're probing neutral-to-earth and seeing ~2-5V, that's essentially normal leakage/reference behaviour. If you're seeing significantly higher, it's worth checking whether your neutral-earth bond is actually in place at the inverter or your consumer unit.

Deye units (and my Victron Multiplus in the shepherd's hut) establish their own neutral reference internally. Without a solid earth connection, that "floating" neutral will read all sorts of alarming voltages on a multimeter.

Key questions:

  • Are you measuring neutral-to-earth, or neutral-to-something-else?
  • Is your system properly earthed at a single point?
  • What voltage figure are you actually seeing?

The single-bonding-point rule is critical off-grid — multiple neutral-earth bonds cause exactly this kind of confusing reading.

So this is something that caught me out too when I was wiring up my Ducato conversion! Quick question for the thread — does it matter what reference point you're measuring against?

I was getting confused readings and eventually realised I was probing neutral-to-chassis ground rather than neutral-to-earth at the inverter itself. Two very different things depending on whether your system is bonded or not.

@WillReid's point about how you're measuring is making me wonder — is there a "correct" way to check this on a Victron Multiplus-style setup vs the Deye specifically? Are the internals handling the neutral-earth bond differently between manufacturers?

Asking because I'm about to help a mate commission a small shepherds hut build using a Deye hybrid and I want to make sure we're not chasing phantom problems before we even get started.

Good point from @WillReid there — the measurement reference really does matter. Are you measuring neutral-to-earth, or neutral-to-ground at the inverter itself?

On a properly configured Deye running in off-grid mode, you should have your neutral bonded to earth at the inverter (and only there — don't double-bond it at a downstream consumer unit or you'll create all sorts of headaches). Once that bond is in place, neutral-to-earth should read very close to zero. If you're still seeing a significant voltage after confirming the bonding, I'd double-check your earth rod connection and resistance. A poor earth can cause all manner of odd readings that'll send you round the bend chasing phantom faults.

@DucatoLife — in a vehicle install the bonding question gets a bit more interesting since you're often using the chassis as earth. Worth its own thread really!

@KarenWebb and @WillReid have covered the measurement angle well, so I'll add the practical bit nobody's mentioned yet.

With a floating neutral inverter (which most Deye units are), there's no hardwired neutral-to-earth bond inside the unit itself. That means your neutral will appear to "float" at some voltage relative to true earth — perfectly normal.

If you're getting around 115V neutral-to-earth you likely haven't got a neutral-earth link established anywhere in your system. On a standalone off-grid setup you generally need to create that bond yourself at your distribution point.

Had exactly this faff commissioning my shepherd's hut setup with a Victron Multiplus — same principle applies across most inverter brands. Check your Deye manual for whether it's a floating or bonded neutral design before you start adding earth bonds yourself, otherwise you'll create problems rather than solve them.
