Orion isolated 48v-12v 30A install

Just fitted a Victron Orion-Tr Isolated 48v-12v 30A to step down from my 48v battery bank to run the 12v side of things — mainly for emergency backup lighting, a 12v fridge and a few USB sockets.

Got everything wired up but I'm getting nothing on the 12v output side. The unit powers on (LED is solid blue), input voltage reads correct at ~51v, but measuring across the output terminals gives me zilch.

Few things I'm unsure about:

• Do I need to enable the unit via the H/L remote pin, or does it run in standalone mode by default? Manual seems a bit ambiguous on this
• Should there be a load connected before it'll output anything, or does it output regardless?
• Anyone had issues with the output fuse being undersized and causing a no-output situation silently?

My wiring is fairly straightforward — 48v in from busbars, fused each side, chassis ground on the output negative. Not using the VE.Direct cable yet, just wanted to get basic functionality confirmed first.

Running Fogstar Drift 48v LifePO4 as the bank if that's relevant. No BMS comms issues showing anywhere.

Is there something obvious I'm missing here? Feel like it's probably something daft with the remote pin config but wanted to check before I start pulling it apart again.

Nice one @MoorCamper, the isolated version is definitely the right choice when you're stepping down from 48v — keeps everything properly separated and avoids any nasty ground loop issues.

One thing worth checking if you haven't already — make sure you've configured the output voltage correctly in VictronConnect. Out of the box it sometimes defaults to a slightly lower output than you'd want for keeping a 12v leisure battery topped up properly. I'd set it around 14.2-14.4v if you're running it in battery charging mode rather than just powering loads directly.

Also worth putting a decent fuse close to the 48v input — the 30A draw on the 12v side translates to a fair bit of current on the 48v input side too, obviously. What are you using for the 48v overcurrent protection on the input?

Good timing on this thread — I've been eyeing up the same unit for my static caravan setup where I've got a 48v Fogstar Drift bank feeding a mix of loads.

One thing I'd want to know @MoorCamper — are you running the Orion in engine-detect mode or just leaving it on permanently? I ask because on my setup I need to be careful about parasitic draw overnight when nothing's actively charging.

Also, what have you got on the 12v output side for overcurrent protection? I've seen some installs where people run a decent ANL fuse close to the Orion output and then separate blade fuses per circuit — is that roughly what you've done?

Curious what your actual output voltage is sitting at under load too — wondering if the default 13.something volts is stable enough for a 12v compressor fridge long term.
