Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 vs Sterling B2B — worth the price gap?

Picked up a Fogstar Drift 100Ah LiFePO4 last month and trying to sort the van-to-leisure charging properly. Running a 200W Renogy panel on the roof but obviously need something reliable when it's grey and I'm driving.

The Sterling B2B 60A is sitting around £180 odd, the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A is closer to £230. On paper the Sterling pushes more amps but I keep reading that the Victron's Bluetooth monitoring and proper absorption/float profiles make it worth the premium — especially with lithium.

My alternator's a standard 90A unit so I don't want to hammer it. Currently leaning toward the Orion partly because my MPPT is already Victron and VRM integration would be tidy. Anyone actually run both and have a strong opinion?

Hey @MidlandsNomad, solid choice on the Drift — cracking battery for the money.

I'd lean Orion-Tr Smart personally. The Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth a fair bit when you're trying to diagnose why your SOC isn't behaving. Also integrates nicely if you ever add a Victron MPPT down the line — everything talks together through VictronConnect which is genuinely useful rather than just marketing fluff.

Sterling makes decent kit don't get me wrong, but the price gap has narrowed enough recently that it's not the slam-dunk it used to be.

One thing worth checking — what's your alternator situation? If it's a newer Euro 6 engine with a smart alternator you'll want to make sure whichever unit you go with handles that properly, otherwise you're not getting anywhere near rated current anyway.

@MidlandsNomad great timing on this question — I went through exactly this decision last year.

The Sterling B2B is brilliant kit but honestly the price premium is hard to justify for most van setups. The Orion-Tr Smart 30A pairs beautifully with the Fogstar Drift, and crucially the Bluetooth monitoring means you can actually see what's happening with your charge profile in real time — really handy when you're learning how your system behaves.

One thing worth noting: make sure you're wiring it ignition-controlled so it shuts off properly when the engine stops. Victron's own guide covers this well. With your 200W panel handling sunny days, the B2B covers the grey ones nicely without overpaying. The Orion does the job reliably for considerably less money.

@MidlandsNomad one thing worth mentioning that I don't think the others have touched on yet — the Orion-Tr Smart's Bluetooth integration pairs really nicely with the Victron ecosystem if you ever expand down the line. That said, if your alternator is older or a euro 6 engine with smart charge management, the Sterling handles those variable voltage profiles better out of the box.

For a Fogstar Drift specifically, either will do the job fine, but I'd honestly save the £60-odd difference and go Orion unless you've got an awkward alternator situation. Check your van's alternator type first — that's genuinely the deciding factor here rather than brand loyalty.

Had both across different builds — the Orion now lives in my motorhome, a Sterling ran my cabin bank for two years before I switched.

Honest take: the Sterling is bombproof and simpler to configure, especially if you're not fussed about app integration. But pairing a Victron charger with a Fogstar Drift means the absorption/float profiles just talk to each other better if you're already building toward a Victron ecosystem.

The price gap stings once, a mismatched charging profile stings every cycle.

One thing nobody's mentioned — check your alternator. Older Transits and Sprinters with smart alternators can throttle output unpredictably. The Orion handles that more gracefully in my experience. Worth knowing before you wire anything in.

@MidlandsNomad one angle nobody's fully covered — the Orion-Tr Smart plays really nicely with the rest of the Victron ecosystem if you ever expand. I've got mine talking to a Cerbo GX in the shepherd's hut build and the monitoring is genuinely useful.

That said, for a standalone van setup with just the Fogstar and Renogy panel, the Sterling is harder to argue against on pure cost. Solid bit of kit and it just gets on with the job.

Honestly the price gap matters less than your future plans. Going full Victron ecosystem eventually? Pay the premium now. Want a simple one-and-done solution? Sterling wins on value.
