Been wrestling with something similar on my static caravan tow vehicle — a Fiat Ducato Euro 6 with the smart alternator — and I think I've finally started to piece together what's going on, but wanted to see if others have hit the same wall.

Running a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 in isolated mode. Works absolutely fine when the van is just idling or driving without much load. But the moment my roof solar (via a Victron SmartSolar MPPT) is pushing decent charge into the leisure battery, the Orion seems to get confused and either throttles right back or drops out entirely.

My suspicion is the smart alternator is seeing the battery voltage already elevated from solar and deciding it doesn't need to contribute — so it cuts output, which then causes the Orion to see insufficient input voltage and throw in the towel. A sort of domino effect.

A few things I'm wondering:

  • Has anyone used the engine running detection threshold in the Orion app to work around this? I've played with the voltage threshold but it feels like guesswork
  • Would adding a dedicated voltage sense wire to the alternator output rather than the starter battery terminals make any difference here?
  • Is there a known firmware version on the Orion that handles this better?

I'm also running VictronConnect and everything's on the same VE.Smart network, but I'm not sure the Orion is interpreting the network data correctly when solar's active.

Anyone else juggling solar and a smart alternator on a Ducato specifically? Would be good to know if this is a common quirk or something specific to my wiring.

@RussWebb Sounds like you're running into the classic smart alternator variable voltage issue on the Ducato — the ECU deliberately drops the charge voltage when it detects a "full" starter battery, which confuses the Orion-Tr's input sensing. Worth checking what voltage you're actually seeing at the Orion's input terminals when solar is simultaneously active on the leisure side, as backfeed through the DC-DC can sometimes fool the unit into thinking the alternator is already providing adequate voltage. Have you enabled the engine detection feature in the VictronConnect app rather than relying purely on voltage threshold? On Euro 6 Ducatos especially, I'd also double-check you're not triggering the alternator's load response control at an awkward moment during solar peak hours. What does your actual input voltage log look like?

@RussWebb had exactly this on my shepherd's hut setup — Ducato Euro 6, Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 isolated.

Key thing I found: if the Victron solar MPPT is already holding the starter battery at a decent voltage via a VSR or something, the Orion sees "battery full" and just... sits there doing nowt.

What sorted it for me was enabling the engine detection via alternator voltage threshold in the Orion settings — set it around 13.2V so it knows the engine's actually running rather than relying on a D+ signal.

Also worth checking your Orion firmware is current. Mine was on an older version that handled the variable voltage really poorly.

The Ducato ECU dropping alternator output to 12.8V at motorway speeds proper confuses it otherwise.

Has anyone confirmed whether the issue is specifically worse when solar is simultaneously pushing charge into the leisure battery?

Wondering if the Orion-Tr Smart's input voltage sensing gets confused when the battery is already sitting higher than usual (from the solar panels) — so the alternator's variable output looks even more erratic relative to what the Orion expects to see.

My setup is purely static/emergency backup so I haven't hit this personally, but I'm trying to understand whether the fix is purely on the alternator input side or whether managing the solar charge controller output simultaneously is also part of the solution.

Is there a way to configure the Orion-Tr Smart via the VictronConnect app to set a lower input voltage threshold that better tolerates the smart alternator's fluctuations?

@PVKing yes, and it's worse than you'd think. When solar is actively holding the leisure bank at or near absorption voltage, the Orion-Tr sees the battery as "full" and throttles back or cuts out entirely — even if the alternator is actually available. The input voltage threshold isn't the only culprit; the output-side voltage is what kills it.

On my narrowboat I solved this by configuring the Orion-Tr's absorption/float settings to sit above what the MPPT was doing, so the DC-DC always had somewhere to push current. Requires careful coordination between your Victron MPPT and Orion profiles — ideally both on the same VE.Smart network so they're at least aware of each other.

Without that network link, they're essentially fighting blind.
