Orion XS 1400 (50A): Beginner question about the right voltage setup

Got my Orion XS 50A running in a Transit Custom last year and the smart alternator dance with voltage settings nearly did my head in — turns out Victron's default input thresholds are a touch conservative for Ford's variable voltage nonsense, so worth double-checking yours against actual measured alternator output rather than just trusting the NV300's spec sheet.

Anyone else finding the "engine running detection" threshold needs nudging up slightly? My alternator was sitting around 13.1V at idle and the Orion kept getting confused about whether to bother charging at all.

On the lithium side — if you're pairing this with a Fogstar Drift or similar 12V LiFePO4, make sure you've got the output absorption voltage dialled in properly rather than leaving it on the AGM preset, otherwise you'll either undercharge or stress the BMS unnecessarily.

Key bits I'd verify straight away:

  • Input lockout voltage — measure your actual alternator output at idle vs cruise
  • Output charge profile — lithium vs AGM matters enormously here
  • VE.Direct connection to the Victron app so you can actually see what's happening in real time

The Orion XS is genuinely brilliant kit once it's configured correctly, but out of the box it's making a few assumptions about your system that may not hold.

What's your leisure battery chemistry? That'll change the conversation quite a bit — LiFePO4 forgives a lot less than a chunky AGM would.

@VE_Electric yeah the defaults are cautious alright 😄

Had same head-scratching moment wiring up EV charging capability to my shepherd's hut setup — smart alternators on modern vans are a proper faff until the penny drops.

Worth bumping your input voltage start threshold up slightly (I run 13.2V) so it doesn't keep cutting in/out when the alternator's doing its ECU-managed dip thing. The Orion XS is dead smart once it's dialled in though.

Key thing people miss: check your engine running detection is set to voltage not BMS signal unless you've got that wired in properly — caused me no end of head-scratching before I spotted it in VictronConnect buried about four menus deep 🙄

@VE_Electric the smart alternator voltage "dance" is putting it mildly — more like a full interpretive performance complete with the Orion sitting there doing absolutely nothing while you scratch your head wondering if you've wired it backwards 😄

Seriously though, the input start voltage is the one that trips most people. Default 13.2V sounds reasonable until

@BrianBrown ha, interpretive performance — that's exactly it. Mine did the hokey cokey for about three weeks before I figured out the input lockout voltage was the culprit.

Running an Orion XS 50A in my van conversion and the penny finally dropped when I started logging the alternator output properly. Smart alternators on these modern vans can sit anywhere between 12.8v and 14.8v depending on what the BCM fancies doing that afternoon.

What sorted it for me: bumped the input lockout down slightly from default and set a longer repetitive absorption time. Suddenly the unit stopped treating every voltage dip like a mortal threat.

Worth noting — if you're also using it for EV charging capability like @GazAllen mentioned, you really want stable thresholds or you'll be pulling your hair out watching it cut in and out mid-session.

Just to add something practical for anyone still wrestling with this — once I'd connected mine up to VictronConnect and had a proper look at the input voltage history, it made the whole thing much clearer. You can actually see what your alternator is doing rather than just guessing.

My Transit's smart alternator was dropping to around 12.7V during regenerative phases and the Orion kept disconnecting thinking the engine was off. Nudging the "start voltage" down slightly and adding a longer start delay sorted it completely.

Worth checking your actual alternator behaviour before tweaking blindly though — every vehicle seems to have its own personality with these things!

@HeatherMandy the "hokey cokey" phase is basically a rite of passage at this point 😄

On my narrowboat I run a different setup, but I helped a mate dial in his Transit last spring — the thing that finally cracked it for him was logging the actual voltage at the alternator terminals under load rather than trusting assumptions. Turns out his smart alternator was sitting consistently lower than the Victron default threshold expected.

Quick wins worth trying:

  • Lower your input start voltage slightly in VictronConnect
  • Check the voltage at the Orion terminals, not the battery
  • Give it a longer input present delay to ride out the dips

Once we adjusted those three, his stopped cycling. Took twenty minutes and a proper multimeter rather than weeks of head-scratching.
