So here's one that's been nagging at me for a while and I can't find a clear answer in the Victron docs.

My setup is a bit of a beast that's grown organically over the years — started as a simple emergency backup for the house, ended up as a full off-grid system that also charges the EV when the sun's cooperating.

Current kit:

  • Two Fogstar 200Ah LiFePO4 batteries wired in parallel (12V system)
  • Multiplus II 3000 handling the AC side, connected to the grid and a small petrol genny via a transfer switch
  • Orion XS 50A DC-DC charger feeding from the vehicle alternator when I'm running things mobile

The question is around the Orion XS 50's actual output behaviour when the Multiplus is simultaneously doing absorption on the batteries. I'm seeing what looks like the Orion backing off its output, but I can't tell if that's:

  1. Correct BMS-driven behaviour via the shared VE.Bus comms
  2. Some kind of voltage-sensing conflict because the Multiplus is holding the bus high during absorption
  3. Something else entirely that I'm missing

The batteries never seem to reach full SOC when both are active at the same time. It's not a disaster — system works fine — but it bothers me that I don't understand what's happening.

Has anyone run a similar parallel charging arrangement with the XS specifically? The older Orion Smart behaviour I've read about doesn't seem to map cleanly onto the XS firmware.

@AZY_Marine the Orion XS 50A is a DC-DC charger, so its output is charge-profile controlled — it won't simply pass 50A continuously if the receiving battery's voltage climbs and the algorithm backs off. What's the actual question you're building towards? Your post got cut off mid-sentence.

That said, a common gotcha I've seen with the XS series specifically: if you're running it into a lithium bank that already has decent state of charge, the absorption phase will throttle output significantly earlier than people expect. My garden office setup sees this constantly — the Orion XS 30 regularly shows 8-12A actual throughput even though it's rated 30A, simply because the 200Ah Fogstar Drift bank is already sitting at 80%+ by midday.

Share your full topology and I can probably give you a more targeted answer.

@Trigger has covered the charge-profile point well. What I'd add from practical experience running an Orion XS 50A in my shepherds hut setup: the 50A figure is the input current draw from your source battery, not the output. Depending on voltage differential between banks, actual output to your leisure battery will vary — Victron's own efficiency curves show roughly 93–95% under typical conditions, so you're realistically looking at 46–47A delivered at best.

Worth checking in VictronConnect under the charger tab — it shows real-time output current clearly. If you're seeing the unit throttling back unexpectedly, also check your cable sizing on the output side; undersized cabling causes the XS to derate quite aggressively compared to the older Orion-Tr Smart.

Good points from @Trigger and @BordersExplorer already. One thing worth adding: the 50A rating is the output current, not input. Your starter battery side will draw considerably more depending on the voltage differential between banks. If you're running a lower starter voltage (say, engine off and sitting at 12.4V) whilst the leisure bank is deeply discharged, the input current spikes noticeably — worth factoring in if your starter circuit wiring is marginal.

Also, running mine in the shepherd's hut via VictronConnect, I found the absorption/float thresholds matter enormously with lithium. Make sure you've selected the correct battery preset or built a custom profile — the default lead-acid curve will absolutely murder LiFePO4 cells over time if left unchecked.

Check the VRM portal logs if you've got a Cerbo; the actual charge current curve tells a much clearer story than the rated spec suggests.

Worth flagging something nobody's mentioned yet — the Orion XS 50A will reduce its output if the input voltage drops too low. If your starter battery (or alternator output) sags under load, the charger backs off to protect itself. I've seen this catch people out when they assume they're getting a steady 50A but the input side is struggling.

Also worth checking in VictronConnect — the charger logs input/output data so you can see exactly what it's been doing. Saved me a lot of head-scratching when I was commissioning my garden office setup.

What's your input source? If it's alternator-fed, the input voltage profile will be quite different to a battery-to-battery scenario, which affects how the charger behaves in practice.
