Bit of a niche one this, but curious if anyone else has experimented with running a Multiplus in a partial or temporary config before committing to a full installation.

I've been messing about with a Multiplus-II 48/3000 in what I'd call a "staged" setup — it's currently just handling UPS-style passthrough for my garden office whilst I wait for the full battery bank (Fogstar Drift 48V cells) to arrive. Grid goes in, grid goes out, inverter bridges the gap. Simple enough in theory.

Where it gets fiddly is the VE.Configure settings when you're not yet running a proper solar/storage system. Things like:

  • AC input current limit — do you set this conservatively to avoid nuisance tripping, or leave it generous?
  • UPS function toggle — on or off when the battery is essentially just a buffer pack?
  • Dynamic current limiter — anyone actually found this useful in a weak-grid situation?

My setup is feeding a fairly sensitive NAS and a couple of monitors, so I can't have it flapping around. So far it's been rock solid, but I'm suspicious I've just been lucky with the settings rather than actually dialled it in properly.

Anyone been through the process of configuring a Multiplus before the full ESS system is in place? Particularly interested if you've got experience with genuinely unstable grid supply — rural Pennines here, and we get some spectacular voltage dips in winter.

VEConfigure3 or the newer VictronConnect approach — what are people using these days for initial paramétrage... or as we'd say, getting the settings right? 😄

@PennineVanLifer yeah done exactly this on my narrowboat before committing to the permanent install. Ran the Multiplus II 12/3000 on a bench setup with a single 100Ah Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 just to nail down the VEConfigure settings before bolting everything in place.

Few things worth knowing:

  • Battery type settings matter immediately — get your absorption/float voltages right from day one even in test config
  • assistants (like ESS or two-signal BMS) can be loaded without full wiring, just needs USB-MK3 interface
  • The transfer switch behaviour is worth validating in bench conditions before you're buried in a van cupboard tweaking it

VictronConnect gives you basics but VEConfigure3 is where the proper paramétrage happens — worth downloading and familiarising yourself now.

What specific settings are you trying to dial in before committing?

@PennineVanLifer the thread title being in French is doing my head in, but yes — absolutely valid approach, Victron's VE.Configure software lets you export/import .ves files so you can snapshot your "experimental" config before you commit, meaning you're never truly lost if the permanent install throws a curveball.

Key things to nail down before going permanent:

  • Transfer switch timing — default 20ms is fine for most loads but some sensitive kit hates it
  • Dynamic current limiter — essential if your shore power supply is sketchy (very much a UK van/marina reality)
  • Battery charge curve — if you're on Fogstar Drift LiFePO₄, don't just leave it on the AGM preset and wonder why your BMS keeps tripping

The .ves file approach saved me considerable grief during my own installation.

Just rename the thread while you're at it @OldSailor — "Paramétrage" is haunting me like a ghost on my narrowboat at 2am.

Ran my Multiplus-II in a cobbled-together bench test for about three weeks before bolting it into the tiny house — saved me an absolute nightmare when I discovered my battery cable sizing was completely wrong before anything was permanent. Fogstar cells were very patient about the whole ordeal.

The key bit nobody mentions: set your input current limit conservatively during the trial phase or you'll trip every breaker on site like a numpty.

Done this exact thing for my garden office before I ran the proper DC cable. Ran the Multiplus II off a temp battery bank just to nail the ESS settings in VEConfigure before anything was bolted down permanently.

Key thing — make sure your temp setup still has properly fused connections and a decent earth, even if it's only for a day. Seen people skip that "just for testing" and regret it.

VictronConnect lets you tweak a fair bit without a laptop now too, which helps for quick iterations.

@OldSailor is right that VE.Configure is where the real paramétrage happens though 😄 — grid input current limits, charge curve, all of it. Worth getting those dialled in on the bench before install so you're not fumbling about in a confined space later.

@CE_Builds same here with my shepherd's hut build — ran the Multiplus II in a kind of "proof of concept" config for about three weeks before I committed to the proper cable runs. Used VE.Configure to set conservative charge limits and kept the transfer switch disabled until I was happy.

One thing worth noting: if you're doing this on a boat like @EssexNomad, watch your temp battery connections like a hawk — marine vibration is brutal on improvised setups. Had a loose Anderson connector cause a right mess on mine.

The partial config approach is genuinely underrated for catching wiring issues early. I'd rather find problems at the "spaghetti on a workbench" stage than once everything's hidden behind panels.
