Been down this exact rabbit hole a couple of times now, so happy to share what I've learned the hard way.
Short version: it depends entirely on what you're protecting with it.
For my motorhome I started with a no-name MPPT off eBay — looked the part, had all the right numbers printed on the label (40A, "MPPT", etc.), but logging the actual charge behaviour told a different story. It was basically PWM with a marketing budget. Fine for keeping a leisure battery topped up, genuinely risky once you're running lithium chemistry where the charge profile actually matters.
For the garden office build I just bit the bullet and went Victron SmartSolar. Night and day difference, mainly because of the Bluetooth monitoring — you can see exactly what it's doing at every stage. Worth every penny of the premium when you're running a proper 24V LiFePO4 setup.
That said, I've seen people on here run Renogy controllers for years without drama, and they're reasonably priced without being complete lottery tickets. There's definitely a middle ground between "Victron money" and "eBay mystery box."
My rough rule of thumb:
- Lead acid, small system, not mission-critical → cheap controller, monitor it, accept the risk
- Lithium, larger array, or something you rely on → don't gamble, spend properly
The other thing worth checking is whether the eBay unit has any kind of temperature compensation or proper absorption/float stages — most of them either lie about this or implement it so poorly it barely matters.
What panel wattage and battery chemistry are you working with? That'd help narrow down whether the cheap option is genuinely viable here.
