Anyone else tried parallelising a pair of Victron RS 48/6000 units and felt like they were deciphering ancient runes with zero support? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁤󠁾

My static caravan setup desperately needs more grunt — especially when the EV's on charge and the emergency backup kicks in simultaneously (yes, that's a "fun" day on site) — so I've been eyeing up running two of these beasts together to get a proper 12kW of inverter capacity.

The Victron documentation is characteristically gorgeous to look at and absolutely useless when you actually need a straight answer. Their dealers seem to operate on a "we sold it, good luck" basis, which is reassuring.

Specific questions I'm wrestling with:

  • Do both units need identical firmware before attempting parallel operation, or will they negotiate like polite Brits at a roundabout?
  • Is the Ve.Can bus the correct interconnect here, or are there additional parallel cables the manual mysteriously neglects to mention?
  • Anyone running this combo in the UK on a TN-C-S supply where the DNO gets twitchy about larger inverters?

I've trawled the Victron Community forums and found about three threads from 2019 that contradict each other spectacularly — absolute bingo card of conflicting advice.

If anyone's actually got this working in a real install (not just theoretically on a spreadsheet at 2am), I'd genuinely love to hear how you got there, because my supplier's response to technical questions is essentially a shrug rendered in email form.

@HeatherChild the RS parallel setup docs are notoriously rough — Victron's own community forum has a few threads that are actually more useful than the official manual tbh.

One thing that tripped me up with my garden office build was getting the VE.Can termination resistors sorted before anything else. If those aren't right the units won't even handshake properly and you'll just get cryptic errors.

Also worth checking:

  • Both units identical firmware before you start
  • Phase sync cable seated properly
  • VictronConnect showing both on the same network

The RS series is still relatively new so parallel support docs are a bit sparse compared to Quattro/Multiplus setups where there's years of community knowledge.

What firmware version are you running? That might narrow it down — there were some known parallel bugs in earlier releases.

@HeatherChild oh god yes, the RS parallel docs are... something. I spent an actual weekend on this last autumn for my cabin setup.

Few things that tripped me up specifically:

  • The VE.Can termination resistors — both ends, not just one, obvious in retrospect
  • Phase sync cable has to be a specific length, not just "short"
  • Cerbo GX sees them as separate units until you've done the parallel config in VEConfigure properly

One pedantic thing that matters loads — the RS 48/6000 is not the same parallel process as the Quattro, which most guides conflate. Completely different firmware path.

What's your battery setup? Mine's Fogstar Drift 48v and I had some comms oddities that turned out to be BMS related rather than the inverters themselves.

@HeatherChild had a nightmare similar to this when I was beefing up the emergency backup system in my motorhome a couple of years back — not RS units, but the parallel comms setup gave me grief regardless.

One thing nobody seems to mention clearly: the RS 48/6000 parallel link requires both units running identical firmware before they'll even handshake properly. Caught me out completely. Check that first in VictronConnect before anything else.

Also, are you using the dedicated parallel cable Victron supply, or trying to bodge something together? The proprietary connector on the RS series is fussy — it's not the same as older MultiPlus parallel setups, so don't assume crossover compatibility.

What does your battery bank look like? Sometimes the RS throws parallel errors that are actually BMS communication issues in disguise rather than inverter problems. Worth ruling out.

@HeatherChild I've got a parallel RS 48/6000 pair running in my off-grid workshop and honestly the setup clicked once I stopped treating the documentation as a linear process. The bit that tripped me up initially was the VE.Can termination — both ends of the bus need resistors enabled and it's embarrassingly easy to miss. Check your GX device is recognising both inverters as a proper parallel pair rather than just two independent units, as that distinction matters enormously for how the system behaves under load. What symptoms are you actually seeing? Subtle things like one unit carrying noticeably more load than the other, or are you getting actual faults? That'll narrow things down quickly. Also worth confirming your firmware is identical across both units — mismatched versions cause all sorts of headaches that don't show up as obvious errors.
