Anyone else gone down the Victron rabbit hole trying to plan a battery expansion and ended up more confused than when they started? 🐇
Currently running a fairly modest setup in my garden office — Fogstar Drift 100Ah, a Renogy MPPT, and a Victron MultiPlus-II that I bolted in thinking "job done." Then I decided I wanted more storage and suddenly I'm drowning in talk of ESS configurations, VE.Bus, and whether my existing kit will even play nicely with additional batteries.
The bit that's doing my head in specifically:
- Parallel vs series battery expansion — Fogstar say their Drift cells can be paralleled, but everyone on the internet has a strong opinion about whether you should
- BMS communication — does the MultiPlus actually need to "talk" to the BMS properly, or is it fine left to its own devices?
- Cerbo GX — is it genuinely essential for a more complex setup, or just Victron's way of getting another £150 out of me?
I've been poking around with AI tools to help plan it out (surprisingly useful for sanity-checking wiring diagrams, to be fair), but nothing beats someone who's actually burnt their eyebrows off doing this stuff in real life.
If you've expanded storage on a Victron-based system — especially in something small like a garden office or shed — I'd love to know what tripped you up. Specifically whether you went full Victron ecosystem or mixed brands without it all falling apart.
Reckon there's a right answer here or is it just "throw money at Victron until it works"? 😅
