Similar situation to what a few people have raised elsewhere — running off a limited grid supply and wanting to boost capacity without accidentally pushing power back.

In my case it's a static setup on a site with strict no feed-in rules. The warden is very particular about it. I've been looking hard at the Victron RS Smart Solar range for exactly this reason, but the feed-in prevention side of things isn't always clearly documented.

From what I've gathered so far:

  • The grid feed-in can be disabled in VEConfigure / VictronConnect settings
  • You'd set the inverter to "external control" or limit AC output accordingly
  • ESS (Energy Storage System) mode has a "keep batteries charged" option that should prevent export

But I'm not 100% confident that covers every edge case — what happens during a sudden load drop, for instance? Does it react fast enough to avoid a brief spike back into the grid?

Anyone here actually running a RS 48/6000 in a no-export configuration? Particularly interested in:

  1. Whether the settings are reliable long-term or need babysitting
  2. If a Victron Energy Meter is genuinely necessary to make it behave properly
  3. Whether Fogstar batteries play nicely with the RS series over the CAN bus

I've seen some folk mention using a physical relay or contactor as a belt-and-braces backup to prevent export entirely, which feels like the pragmatic approach if the software side isn't watertight.

Keen to hear from anyone who's actually stress-tested this rather than just going off spec sheets.

@LiFePO4Fan relevant to my own static caravan setup this — the RS Smart Solar has an AC feed-in toggle in VictronConnect which you can simply disable. That prevents any export to grid full stop.

Worth also setting up the grid setpoint in ESS (I run mine at around +50W) so the system always draws a small amount from grid rather than risking momentary feed-in during load drops.

A few questions about your specific setup:

  • What's your DNO connection type — single phase TN-C-S?
  • Have you got a grid meter (e.g. the Victron ET340) installed, or relying on the built-in AC sensor?

Without a proper grid meter the feed-in prevention is less reliable in my experience. The ET340 gives the system much tighter feedback for keeping that setpoint accurate.

@BlownFuse already covered the AC feed-in toggle so I won't flog that dead horse, but make sure you've also got ESS assistant configured properly in VEConfigure — I learned the hard way that the toggle alone isn't always enough if your grid setpoint is set wrong and you end up exporting anyway like a complete muppet. Set grid setpoint to around 50W (positive, pulling from grid) so the system always tries to consume a tiny bit rather than sit on zero and accidentally tip over. Running a near-identical static caravan setup here and it's been solid since I sorted that. Also worth checking your DNO agreement — some won't touch you if they find out you've been feeding in without permission, even accidentally.

@LiFePO4Fan done this on my own static — one thing nobody's mentioned yet: double-check your grid code settings in ESS. Picked the wrong one once and my meter started running backwards like it was possessed 👻 DNO were not amused.

Also worth setting a minimum SOC so you're not accidentally draining

@NotAnElectrician80 makes a good point on ESS — worth adding that once ESS is configured, you'll want to set your minimum SOC carefully so the system isn't constantly trying to discharge to grid either.

Also worth checking: in VictronConnect under System → Grid there's a feed-in excess solar charger power toggle separate from the AC feed-in switch. Both need disabling if you want a belt-and-braces approach.

On my cabin setup I run a similar grid-assist configuration — keeping grid setpoint slightly positive (say +50W) means the system always draws a small trickle from the grid rather than risking momentary feed-in during load drops. Small but effective buffer.

@ExJoiner32's grid code point is crucial — wrong code can override your other settings entirely.
