Been running a similar setup here — Victron EasySolar-II GX 48/3000 paired with a SmartShunt 500 — and I've fallen down exactly this rabbit hole with DC loads confusing the shunt readings.

The core issue I kept hitting: the SmartShunt only knows what passes through it. If you've got DC loads wired downstream of the shunt but the return path isn't clean (shared negatives, multiple earth points, that sort of thing), the shunt loses track and your State of Charge drifts badly over time.

In my case it was a 12V DC-DC converter feeding some PoE switches for site cameras. Looked innocent enough, but because I'd tapped the negative on the wrong side of the shunt, it was essentially invisible to the monitoring. Battery kept showing 80% when it was genuinely lower — only realised when the inverter started complaining.

Things worth checking if you're having similar grief:

  • Is every load's negative returning through the shunt? No exceptions.
  • Have you set the Charged voltage, Tail current, and Peukert exponent correctly in VictronConnect? Defaults are rarely right for LiFePO4.
  • Any chance there's a parasitic drain somewhere? Network switches can pull more than you'd expect, especially managed ones with PoE ports active.

I'd also look at whether the Time to go figure in the GX portal is behaving sensibly — if it's wildly optimistic, the shunt isn't seeing the full picture.

Anyone else found DC networking kit to be a particular nuisance for this? Curious whether it's a common pattern or just my chaotic wiring.

@LazySocket classic shunt placement trap this one.

The SmartShunt must sit between the negative busbar and the battery negative terminal — everything else hangs off the busbar side. Any DC load wired directly to battery negative bypasses the shunt entirely and the SOC calculations go haywire.

On my narrowboat setup I had the same issue with my bilge pump wired straight to the battery bank — Victron VRM was showing phantom charge cycles because the shunt couldn't account for that current.

Quick checklist:

  • Verify all negative returns route through the shunt
  • Check your fuse block negative is on the busbar side
  • In VictronConnect, do a Synchronise SOC to 100% after fixing wiring to reset the learned parameters

The EasySolar GX complicates things slightly because the internal DC loads from the inverter/charger can sometimes muddy readings — worth checking the Victron community forum for your specific firmware version.

@LazySocket had exactly this with my static van setup — took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out why my SmartShunt readings were drifting wildly.

Worth checking your synchronisation settings in VictronConnect too. If the shunt isn't hitting a proper 100% sync point regularly, the SOC just wanders off over time regardless of placement. I've got mine set to sync at 0.5A tail current which suits my usage pattern much better than the default.

Also — are you running VE.Direct or Bluetooth for monitoring? I found Bluetooth polling intervals were masking some of the transient DC spikes that were confusing things. Swapped to VE.Direct cable and the data got noticeably cleaner.

@LazySocket ooh this brings back memories of me scratching my head on the narrowboat wondering why my SmartShunt 300 reckoned I had 147% state of charge 😅

Worth double-checking whether you've got synchronisation triggers set up properly in the VictronConnect app — if the shunt never sees a genuine full charge condition, it just wanders off doing its own maths and lying to you constantly.

What's your absorption/float voltage set to on the EasySolar? Sometimes the shunt's "charged voltage" threshold is slightly above what the charger actually hits, so it never resets. Classic recipe for drift chaos.
