Pylontech US3000C not balancing properly after winter - worth recalibrating?

Had exactly this after last winter with my US3000C stack — two units sitting at the bottom of their SOC range whilst the third cracked on ahead like it had somewhere to be. Classic sign the pack needs a full recalibration cycle rather than anything catastrophic going wrong.

What worked for me was a proper slow discharge down to the low voltage cutoff, letting the BMS do its thing, then a controlled full charge back up. I did this twice over about a week. The Victron Cerbo picked up much better balance data afterwards and the drift sorted itself within a fortnight of normal cycling.

A few things worth checking first though:

  • Cell voltage spread at rest — if you're seeing more than ~30mV between the highest and lowest cells, that's your culprit
  • Firmware on the BMS — Pylontech pushed an update a while back specifically addressing winter calibration drift
  • Whether your system was sitting at low SOC for extended periods over winter (this is usually what causes it — lithium really doesn't like being parked at 20% for months on end)

The Pylontech app gives you per-cell data if you connect via the RS485 console cable, which is brilliant for diagnosing whether it's genuine imbalance or just the SOC algorithm getting confused.

Worth doing before assuming you've got a duff cell. In my experience these packs are pretty robust — mine's been on the side of a tiny house in rural Wales for three years and still performs well.

Anyone else found specific charge parameters help after winter hibernation? Curious whether dropping the charge current helps the balancing settle faster.

@48VWizard had the same carry-on with my static van setup last spring. The fix that actually worked for me: let the whole stack discharge right down to the low-voltage cutoff, then do a slow charge from empty at around 0.1C. Pylontechs are remarkably good at self-balancing once you give them the full voltage window to work with rather than faffing about in the middle range all winter.

Worth checking your Victron DVCC settings too — if cell balancing is being cut short because your absorb time is too aggressive, the BMS never gets the chance to finish the job properly.

One full cycle sorted mine out completely. Two seasons on and the three units are tracking within 1% of each other. Don't rush to replace anything yet.

@48VWizard had this exact faff with my shepherd's hut setup last March. Worth checking your Victron settings first — if your absorption voltage is a touch low the weaker cells never get a proper top-up and the imbalance just compounds over winter.

Bumped mine from 52.8V to 53.2V for a couple of full cycles and the stack sorted itself out pretty sharpish. Also double-check the inter-unit comms cables — had one slightly loose on mine which was confusing the BMS no end.

Pylontech's own recalibration procedure is worth a go if the above doesn't crack it, but I'd try the simpler stuff first before going down that rabbit hole.

@48VWizard one thing nobody's mentioned yet — check whether your absorption voltage is actually high enough to trigger the Pylontech's internal balancing. The US3000C won't properly balance unless it reaches the upper threshold consistently. If your Victron MPPT or MultiPlus has drifted slightly in its charge profile (can happen after firmware updates), you might be cutting off just before the balancing kicks in.

Had this in my garden office setup over winter. Looked like a balance issue, turned out the charge voltage was 0.3V lower than it should've been after a GX update. Fixed the profile and it sorted itself within a few cycles.

Worth cross-checking your actual charge voltage against what the Cerbo GX is reporting — they're not always identical.

Been through this exact saga with my motorhome stack last February. What sorted it for me was patience more than anything clever — I ran three full discharge-to-near-empty cycles back-to-back before the cells started talking to each other properly again.

One thing worth adding to what @GlenDoug said: if you're running Victron kit, pop into VictronConnect and check your battery history tab. Mine was showing phantom high-voltage events from before winter that had quietly nudged the BMS into a protective mode. Resetting that history alongside proper recalibration made a genuine difference.

Also worth knowing — Pylontech's own documentation suggests the US3000C needs ambient temps above 10°C to balance effectively. If your install is uninsulated and you're rushing this in a cold garage, you might just be fighting the chemistry itself.
