Been running a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A on the narrowboat for about two years now, pulling from the engine alternator into a 200Ah Fogstar LiFePO4 bank — honestly it's the single best upgrade I've made for emergency backup when solar goes rubbish (so, November through March then).

The thing that catches people out is the isolated vs non-isolated question. On a boat you absolutely want isolated to avoid galvanic corrosion eating your hull, but for a car-to-leisure-battery setup it's less critical — just make sure you're not sharing a common negative doing something daft.

Also worth flagging for anyone shopping around: the cheap Amazon units (you know the ones, generic branding, suspiciously round numbers on every spec) tend to not play nicely with LiFePO4 because they don't properly tail off the charge when the alternator voltage drops under load. Victron's the gold standard but Renogy's DC-DC units are decent value if the budget's tight.

One gotcha nobody mentions — smart alternators on modern cars (anything post ~2012 really) vary their output voltage intentionally to recover braking energy, which confuses a basic converter no end. You need a unit specifically rated for smart alternators or you'll get weird behaviour and potentially stress the alternator.

Anyone else running DC-DC off a vehicle alternator for LiFePO4? Curious what amperage people are going for — tempted to upsize mine but worried about cooking the alternator on longer cruises.

@FormerMechanic43 solid choice — the Orion-Tr Smart is genuinely bulletproof for narrowboat use. One thing worth mentioning that catches people out: make sure you've got the isolation version if your alternator and leisure bank share a common negative through the hull. On steel boats especially, without galvanic isolation you can end up with some really nasty corrosion issues over time that aren't immediately obvious.

Also worth checking your alternator's duty cycle — running a 30A DC-DC hard against a small alternator on tickover whilst cruising the canals will cook it eventually. I run mine set back to around 20A on my setup purely to keep temperatures sensible. The Victron Connect app makes throttling it dead easy at least.

Worth flagging though — two years is still relatively early days for alternator stress on an LiFePO4 setup. The issue isn't the Victron unit itself, it's that LiFePO4 can pull hard at bulk stage and older alternators weren't designed for that sustained load. Seen a few people on here report alternator failures around the 3-4 year mark.

If your alternator is original equipment on the engine, might be worth checking the amp rating and whether it's got any thermal protection. A Balmar or Sterling alternator regulator can take some of the strain off if you're doing long cruising days.

Running a similar DC-DC setup in my shepherd's hut off a leisure battery — different context obviously, but the principle holds. Don't assume the Victron protecting your lithiums means everything upstream is equally protected.

Something worth adding from a motorhome perspective — alternator load management becomes particularly critical when you're running a smaller engine (I've got a 2.0l diesel) versus a narrowboat's dedicated engine setup.

The Orion-Tr Smart's input current limiting is doing serious heavy lifting here. Without it, you're essentially asking the alternator to sustain near-maximum output indefinitely, which thermal-cycles the rotor windings far beyond what short burst driving was designed for.

I'd strongly recommend enabling the engine runtime detection via the VictronConnect app if you haven't already — pairs nicely with a temperature sensor on the alternator casing. I use a basic infrared thermometer periodically as a sanity check.

Also worth noting: modern variable-geometry alternators on Euro 6 engines behave quite differently under sustained DC-DC load compared to older fixed-output units. Worth factoring in if your boat's engine is relatively recent.

Good thread. One thing nobody's touched on yet — if you're running a smart/variable voltage alternator (loads of newer engines have them), the Orion-Tr Smart handles that really well because it's regulating on the input side rather than just passthrough.

Had a mate who fitted a basic B2B on a van with a euro6 engine and it caused all sorts of headaches with the alternator hunting. The Victron just deals with it quietly.

Also worth knowing — you can daisy-chain two Orion-Tr units in parallel if you ever want more charge current without replacing the whole setup. Handy if your bank grows.

For the garden office context (my use case) it's less relevant, but on a narrowboat where alternator runtime is your primary charge source, getting that B2B right is probably the most important decision in the whole system.
