Been through this exact dilemma fitting out my narrowboat last year, so I've got opinions.

Went with the Victron Multiplus II in the end and honestly don't regret it, but the price gap is real and it hurts. The Renogy REGO is genuinely tempting — decent specs on paper and Renogy have come a long way from their early inverter offerings.

What swung it for me:

  • VRM portal and Victron Connect are genuinely brilliant for monitoring remotely. When you're moored up somewhere and want to check on your boat from a pub, that matters.
  • The Multiplus II's PowerAssist feature is a game-changer if you're on shore power with a limited shore feed — it tops up from the batteries rather than tripping the breaker.
  • Resale value holds up surprisingly well on Victron kit if you ever refit.

That said, if I were doing a more modest tiny house build on a tighter budget, I'd seriously look at the REGO again. The warranty support from Renogy UK has apparently improved and the community knowledge is growing.

The Class B question is interesting though — what's your shore power situation? Are you planning to charge an EV from it occasionally too? Because that changes the calculation quite a bit in my experience. Sustained heavy loads really separate the two.

Anyone else running the REGO long-term? Keen to hear actual lived experience rather than spec-sheet comparisons — those only tell half the story.

@MarineOllie interesting that you landed on the Multiplus II for a narrowboat — the Class B context is worth addressing separately though, because space and weight constraints change the calculus considerably.

The REGO's compact form factor genuinely matters when you're working with a Transit or Sprinter base. That said, the Victron ecosystem integration is hard to ignore — Cerbo GX, Venus OS, proper MPPT communication, and the smart charging algorithms are genuinely superior for lithium management.

My Multiplus II in my motorhome talks to my Fogstar Drift batteries properly via CAN-bus, and the difference in charge efficiency versus a "dumb" inverter-charger is measurable.

The Renogy REGO is tempting at that price point, but I'd scrutinise the firmware update history — Victron's support longevity is unmatched in this market, and for a permanent install that matters enormously long-term.

Great thread this. Worth pointing out that "Class B" specifically means motorhomes in the European type approval sense — quite a different installation environment to a narrowboat @MarineOllie, so your experience is still useful but the constraints differ a bit.

For a Class B motorhome the physical footprint and weight of the Multiplus II can be genuinely challenging depending on your hab space. The Renogy REGO is notably more compact. That said, Victron's ecosystem integration — especially if you're running MPPT solar and want proper SOC monitoring — is hard to beat.

What's your battery chemistry @MarineOllie? LiFePO4 changes the conversation considerably, as the Multiplus II's BMS communication via CAN/VE.Bus is a real practical advantage there.

@Spud17 fair point on the Class B clarification — worth keeping that distinction tight.

For a motorhome context specifically, the Multiplus II wins on integration if you're running a Victron ecosystem (MPPT, Cerbo GX, etc.). The VE.Bus comms alone justify a chunk of that price premium when you want proper SOC tracking on the move.

That said, I've been looking seriously at the Renogy REGO for my van build. For a simpler setup without the full Victron stack, the price-to-wattage ratio is genuinely hard to argue with, and the built-in transfer switch is tidy.

Main concern with the REGO is long-term firmware support and UK service network — Victron's dealer setup here is just mature. If something dies in a layby in Scotland, that matters.

Good point from @Spud17 on the Class B clarification — hadn't clocked that was specifically motorhome territory.

From a narrowboat perspective (which is where I'm coming from), space and weight are obviously different constraints to a motorhome, but the core inverter-charger decision is pretty similar.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — how are you planning to charge? Shore power availability changes the equation massively. On the boat, the Multiplus II's PowerAssist feature is genuinely useful when on a limited shore supply, but if you're mostly wild camping in a motorhome with minimal hookup access, that feature matters a lot less.

Does the Renogy REGO even have an equivalent assist function? That's the bit I'd be digging into before comparing prices.

Good thread. For what it's worth, my shepherd's hut setup runs a Victron Multiplus II and the integration with the GX ecosystem is where it genuinely earns its keep — DVCC, ESS, VRM remote monitoring, the lot. Renogy's software side just isn't in the same league yet.

That said, if someone's purely budget-constrained and doesn't need the advanced charge coordination, the REGO is a reasonable shout for simpler installs. But the moment you're pairing it with lithium (Fogstar Drift cells in my case) and want proper BMS communication, Victron pulls ahead significantly.

The price gap stings initially but I've not had a single issue in 18 months. Hard to put a figure on that peace of mind when you're living off-grid full time.
