Been down a similar rabbit hole recently after the VRM newsletter dropped and got me poking around the widget library again. Spent a good hour scrolling through everything on offer and came away a bit disappointed, if I'm honest.

What I'm after is a proper grid setpoint widget for the dashboard — something that lets you see and ideally tweak the target import/export point without digging through the menus every time. Running a Victron Multiplus-II here with a Fogstar Drift battery bank, and I'm constantly fiddling with the setpoint depending on the season or whether the grid tariff is doing something daft.

Right now my workaround is going through VRM → Advanced → and hunting around manually, which is tedious. A dedicated widget pinned to the overview page would save a fair bit of faff.

I know some of you are running ESS setups with dynamic tariffs (Octopus Agile crowd, I'm looking at you) — surely this would be useful for managing when you're pulling from the grid versus sitting on your batteries?

Few questions for the thread:

  • Is anyone else missing this, or have I just not found it?
  • Is there a Node-RED workaround that surfaces this more cleanly?
  • Would this be worth raising directly with Victron as a feature request, or does it already exist under a different name?

Feels like a glaring omission for anyone running a grid-tied hybrid setup. The VRM dashboard is genuinely good but this kind of thing stops it being great. Hopefully someone here knows something I don't.

@SOC_Nerd that feeling when the VRM newsletter opens a door you didn't know existed — been there. I spent a whole rainy afternoon in the shepherd's hut last autumn convinced I'd finally crack the perfect grid setpoint visualisation, only to realise the widget just... doesn't exist yet.

What I ended up doing was bodging together a tile using the Advanced custom widget builder — gets you close but it's not the clean readout you actually want.

Worth throwing it on the Victron community forum directly if you haven't — they do actually pick these things up, especially when there's enough upvotes behind a feature request. The VRM team seem responsive when the ask is specific rather than vague.

@SOC_Nerd know that rabbit hole well — VRM has a habit of making you realise how much you weren't monitoring before.

On the grid setpoint widget specifically, it's something I've wanted on my dashboard for ages. I'm running a Quattro on the boat with ESS and having to dig into the settings menu every time I want to tweak the setpoint is a bit clunky. A dedicated widget would make fine-tuning so much smoother, especially when you're trying to balance EV charging against grid draw.

Worth raising it directly on the Victron Community forum if you haven't already — they do actually pick up feature requests there and the devs seem reasonably engaged. A few upvotes from this community could help push it along.

@SOC_Nerd the Grid Setpoint widget is hiding in the Advanced section of the widget library — easy to miss because Victron buried it like it's classified information.

Once you've got it on your dashboard, you can dynamically adjust the AC input current limit and grid feed-in setpoint without digging through menus on the GX device itself; genuinely useful if you're doing any ESS work or time-of-use tariff juggling.

Worth noting: it only appears if your installation actually has a grid connection configured in the ESS assistant — if you're purely off-grid it won't show regardless of how long you scroll. Learned that one the hard way on my own Victron Multiplus II setup before realising I hadn't finished the ESS configuration properly.

Check your ESS assistant is fully configured first, then revisit the widget library — should pop right up.

@OldSailor is right about the Advanced section, but worth noting that the Grid Setpoint widget is only going to show up as useful if you've got a proper ESS assistant configured on your Multiplus. Plenty of people find the widget, add it to their dashboard, then wonder why it's doing nothing meaningful — it's because ESS isn't set up correctly at the inverter level first.

On my shepherd's hut setup I spent two days chasing phantom readings before realising my ESS grid setpoint was being overridden by a scheduled charge I'd forgotten about in VEConfigure.

Also worth checking: if you're on a Multiplus-II rather than the original, the ESS behaviour around grid setpoint is slightly different in how it handles the feed-in threshold. Check the Victron ESS design guide before assuming it'll behave as expected.
