Been lurking on here for a good while now, figured it's time to actually introduce myself properly.
Spent thirty years as a sparky working all over the Midlands before calling it a day five years back. Did everything from domestic rewires to industrial installations, so I've got a fairly solid grasp of electrics, though I'll be honest—the modern solar and battery setups are a different beast entirely. Been keeping my eye on Victron equipment reviews on here, fascinating stuff compared to what I used to work with.
Currently living on a narrowboat on the Coventry Canal, which has been the plan since retirement. Started with a basic setup—some cheap panels and a dodgy charge controller that I wouldn't wish on anyone—but after reading the forums here, I've learned enough to know what I was doing wrong. Upgraded to a proper Victron system last year and it's made all the difference. The monitoring side of things is brilliant once you understand it.
The reason I'm posting is that I genuinely enjoy helping people sort out electrical problems. Not looking to do work for money—that ship's sailed—but if anyone's got a tricky wiring question or needs to understand how their battery management system actually functions, I'm game to have a think through it. I know there's a lot of misinformation floating about, especially on social media, and I'd rather see folks get decent advice.
Keen to swap stories with other boaters on here too. Anyone else out there powering a narrowboat entirely off-grid? Always interested in hearing how others have tackled the particular challenges.
