Been digging into this for a couple of weeks now and can't find a definitive answer anywhere.

The Multi RS Solar is a genuinely interesting unit — combines MPPT, inverter, and charger in one box, which is exactly what you'd want for a space-constrained install like my narrowboat. But when you look at the official Victron Microgrid documentation, it's conspicuously absent from the compatible device list. Same goes for anything in the RS range.

My concern is this: if you're building out a proper ESS or microgrid setup with grid-tie capability or generator integration, the RS architecture seems to sit in its own little silo. It talks DVCC fine, shows up in VRM, but the Microgrid-specific functionality — particularly around load balancing and the multi-unit phase configurations — doesn't appear to be supported.

Has anyone actually got clarification from Victron or a distributor on whether this is a roadmap item or just a hard architectural limitation? I've asked on the Victron community forum but responses have been vague at best.

Relevant questions for this lot specifically:

  • Anyone running a Multi RS Solar in a UK off-grid setup with generator backup?
  • Have you found workarounds using Node-RED or Cerbo scripting to replicate any Microgrid behaviour?
  • Is this a dealbreaker for anyone who was considering the RS range over a traditional Multiplus-II route?

For my narrowboat I'm probably sticking with a Multiplus-II 3000 paired with a separate SmartSolar MPPT precisely because the compatibility story is cleaner. The RS all-in-one is tempting on paper but I'm not willing to hit a wall six months in.

Curious what others have found.

@LH_Marine the Multi RS Solar does sit a bit awkwardly in the Victron ecosystem — it uses the RS communication protocol rather than the standard VE.Bus that the rest of the Multis run on, which causes headaches when you try to integrate it into a proper Microgrid setup.

From what I've seen discussed on the Victron community forums, full ESS/Microgrid functionality is still limited compared to a conventional Multi/Quattro. Worth checking the DVCC compatibility notes in the Victron docs carefully before committing.

If tight Microgrid integration is your priority, a Quattro with a separate SmartSolar MPPT is honestly less elegant but far more predictable. That's the route I went — more boxes, but everything talks properly via VE.Bus and GX without any surprises.

What's your battery setup? That might affect which direction makes more sense.

@WelshSolar is right that the RS protocol is the sticking point. I went down this rabbit hole when speccing my garden office system last year — ended up abandoning the Multi RS Solar specifically because I couldn't get a straight answer from Victron's own documentation about VE.Bus compatibility.

What I'd actually want to know before anyone recommends it:

  • Does it play nicely with Venus OS for proper DVCC control?
  • Can you parallel it with a standard Quattro on the same busbar?
  • What does ESS mode actually look like on this unit vs. a conventional Multi?

Anyone run it alongside Fogstar or other lithium comms-wise? My boat refit is coming up and I'm trying to avoid another expensive compatibility mistake. The Victron ecosystem should just work but it really doesn't always.

@LH_Marine welcome to the forum — glad you found us, and this is exactly the kind of deep-dive question we love here.

One thing worth adding to what @WelshMarine and @DodgyMechanic have covered: when I was speccing out my van build last year, I found Victron's own Community forum occasionally had firmware release notes that clarified RS protocol compatibility timelines better than the official docs. Worth trawling through those if you haven't already.

Also, depending on what you're ultimately trying to achieve with the microgrid setup, it might be worth posting your full system diagram — sometimes there are workarounds people have found in practice that never make it into official documentation.

@LH_Marine one thing nobody's mentioned yet — the ESS assistant compatibility is where it gets really messy with the RS units. I had this exact issue when I was trying to integrate EV charging scheduling into my static caravan setup. The RS protocol essentially creates a communication silo, so if you're trying to do any kind of dynamic load balancing through VRM or Node-RED, you'll hit walls that aren't immediately obvious from the documentation.

Victron's own compatibility matrix is... incomplete, honestly. Worth cross-referencing with the Victron Community forum directly — there are a few developers there who've done workarounds using the D-Bus interface, though I'll be honest I only half-understood what they were describing when I read it.

What's your intended load profile? That might change which compromises are actually tolerable in practice.

@VanRhys is absolutely right to flag ESS — that's the crux of it.

The Multi RS Solar runs VE.Can, not VE.Bus, which is where the compatibility wall appears. Standard Microgrid configurations expect VE.Bus devices for the master inverter role, and the RS19 simply won't slot in there cleanly.

Spent a frustrating afternoon with a Victron dealer in the Midlands who confirmed this after I'd already half-specced a system around one. The MPPT integration is genuinely elegant on paper, but you're essentially locked into a parallel strings architecture rather than true Microgrid functionality.

Worth raising directly with Victron UK — they've been updating firmware fairly aggressively on the RS range. What looked impossible eighteen months ago sometimes quietly becomes possible after a release note nobody read properly.

What's the actual use case, @LH_Marine? Shore power backup, or fully islanded?
