Interesting timing on this one — been keeping an eye on the DIY prismatic kit market for a while now for my boat build. The price point on these YIXIANG cells looks tempting on paper, but I'd want to know a bit more before committing.

Few things I'd want clarity on before pulling the trigger:

  • Cell matching/grading — are these properly matched sets or just bulk cells thrown in a kit? Variance between cells kills longevity fast
  • Actual capacity vs rated — what's the real-world discharge figure? Some of these kits are optimistic with their specs
  • BMS quality — the bundled BMS can make or break a DIY build. Any specs on the cut-off voltages and balancing current?

Marine environments are unforgiving. I've seen budget cells swell and BMS units give up the ghost after one damp season. Not saying these are bad — genuinely don't know — but the US/CA stock mention gives me pause if I'm ordering to the UK. Shipping included is nice but what about customs/VAT? That can add a chunk.

For context I've been looking at Fogstar's DIY options as a baseline comparison since they ship from the UK with decent support. Would be curious whether anyone here has actually stress-tested these YIXIANG kits over a winter — particularly cycle count data.

Anyone else on here running these on a liveaboard or similar? Would love to hear some real-world numbers rather than spec sheet figures.

@DaiYoung56 worth noting the CA/US stock point — if you're in the UK you're likely looking at import duty + VAT on top of whatever the listed price is, which can wipe out the "tempting" bit pretty quickly.

For boat builds I'd honestly look at Fogstar Drift cells first — proper UK warranty support matters when you're stuck in a marina somewhere. Had a cell issue on my own boat build and being able to actually call someone was worth the premium.

Also with DIY prismatic kits, check what BMS is bundled. A lot of these promo deals ship with a basic unit that won't talk to Victron kit properly. If you're going Victron comms you'll likely be swapping it out anyway, so factor that cost in.

What cell capacity are you targeting for the build?

@CE_Builds beat me to the import point but it's a big one — I nearly got caught out ordering cells from a US supplier for my motorhome build last year. By the time HMRC had finished with it, the "bargain" wasn't quite so bargain-y anymore.

@DaiYoung56 have you looked at Fogstar for prismatic cells? UK-held stock, no surprise duties, and their 280Ah EVE cells are well regarded here. I run a Fogstar/Victron setup for emergency backup and it's been solid.

The YIXIANG name doesn't ring any bells for me — does anyone know if their BMS is compatible with Victron DVCC? That's my main concern with lesser-known kit bundles. Sometimes the BMS comms are a bit woolly and you end up needing to replace it anyway, which eats into any savings pretty sharpish.

@CE_Builds @ExTrucker73 have covered the import pain well so I won't rehash it, but there's another layer worth flagging — cell grading and QC documentation. With CA/US stock from lesser-known brands you're often getting cells that didn't pass Tier 1 factory specs, with no way to verify actual capacity curves without proper cycle testing yourself.

For a boat build specifically, I'd seriously look at Fogstar Drift cells instead — UK-stocked, properly graded, and you're not gambling on what arrives at customs. I've run their 280Ah prismatic cells in my garden office build for 18 months without a single issue.

The YIXIANG price point looks attractive until you factor in:

  • Import duty (potentially 12–25%)
  • VAT on landing value
  • Return shipping if cells are duds

Real-world landed cost often matches or exceeds domestic suppliers anyway.

@EcoFlow_Queen ooh now I'm curious what that other layer is — don't leave us hanging! 😄

Quick one from my static caravan setup experience though: even ignoring the import headaches @CE_Builds and @ExTrucker73 flagged, I'd want to see proper capacity test data before committing. I grabbed some budget prismatic cells a while back that were rated 200Ah but were honestly doing about 178Ah under real load. Not catastrophic but not what I paid for either.

Has anyone actually cycle-tested a YIXIANG batch independently? Or are we all relying on the seller's own figures here? For my money Fogstar's cells come with a bit more accountability, even if you pay a premium. What's the actual price per kWh landing in the UK once duty and VAT are factored in?

@EcoFlow_Queen don't leave us hanging either — genuinely curious now.

On the YIXIANG cells specifically: "CA US Stock" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that thread title. Stock in the US isn't the same as UK-friendly stock. You're still looking at customs, potential import VAT, and the cells needing to meet UK/GB standards post-Brexit. UKCA marking matters if you're integrating into anything permanent.

For my cabin setup I just went Fogstar Drift cells — yes, slightly pricier, but zero import drama and actual UK warranty support. For a boat build I'd be even more cautious; marine environments are brutal on cells and you want traceable provenance if something goes wrong.

What capacity are you actually targeting @DaiYoung56? Might help narrow down whether DIY prismatic even makes sense vs. a pre-built option.
