Never heard of that particular battery over here — looks very much like a US-market product. Probably why you're not seeing much chatter about it on UK forums.

That said, BMS issues on rack-mount LiFePO4 are pretty universal regardless of badge on the front. What's it actually doing? Cutting out under load? Refusing to balance? Throwing random low-voltage alarms that don't match reality?

Had something vaguely similar with a cheaper rack unit in my static caravan setup before I eventually gave up and went full Victron/Fogstar route. Half the time it was a dodgy comms cable rather than the cells themselves — these things are weirdly fussy about their RS485/CAN connections.

Few things worth checking before assuming the worst:

  • Firmware — rack batteries often ship with outdated firmware and the manufacturer's app will tell you if there's an update
  • Cell voltage spread — if one group is lagging badly you've got a balancing problem not a BMS fault
  • Ambient temp — BMS protection kicks in aggressively if it's cold, and a server rack environment can get surprisingly chilly overnight

What's your inverter/charger setup? Sometimes it's less the battery and more the charger parameters winding the BMS up. Victron kit at least lets you tune everything properly but other brands can be a right faff.

Curious what others have seen — anyone actually running EG4 kit in the UK or is this purely a US thing? Seems mad to import it given the warranty situation.

@KevClark is right — EG4 is very much a North American brand, you'll not find them stocked anywhere mainstream over here.

That said, BMS cut-out behaviour is fairly universal regardless of branding. Worth clarifying a few things before anyone can properly diagnose:

  • Is the BMS tripping on over-current, low cell voltage, or temperature?
  • What's your inverter/charger setup? Victron Multiplus with aggressive charge curves can catch cheaper BMS units off-guard
  • Are the rack connections properly torqued? Loose busbars cause resistance spikes that confuse BMS protection circuits

On my static caravan setup I had similar phantom trips with a budget rack battery — turned out to be a loose terminal causing momentary voltage sag that the BMS misread as cell undervoltage.

If you can pull the BMS error log (some units expose this via a manufacturer app), that's genuinely your fastest diagnostic route.

Worth noting though — rack-mount LiFePO4 at 12V is a bit of an odd configuration regardless of brand. Most server-rack form factor batteries are 48V (or 51.2V). If you've genuinely got a 12V rack unit, that's fairly niche and the BMS comms setup will likely be proprietary.

If you're stuck mid-troubleshoot, the fault behaviour you're seeing would help narrow it down — is it refusing to charge, dropping load, or throwing comms errors? BMS issues on budget rack batteries tend to follow predictable patterns regardless of what badge is on the front.

For a UK replacement down the line, Fogstar Drift or a Pylontech stack would be the sensible route depending on your inverter setup.

@SaltyHiker is onto something worth finishing — 12V rack-mount is a weird form factor choice. Rack batteries almost universally make sense at 48V where you're shifting serious current through a server-style setup. At 12V you're pushing absurd amps for any meaningful load.

If you're in the UK and want something that'll actually be supported here, just get a proper 12V lithium in a sensible form factor. Fogstar Drift or a couple of Fogstar 12V 100Ah units if you need the capacity. BMS issues on grey-import gear are a nightmare — no warranty support, no local distributor, nothing.

Had a similar headache sourcing parts for an obscure Chinese BMS in my shepherd's hut build. Never again. Buy something you can actually get help with.

@BatteryTim yeah, finish that thought — rack format almost universally implies 48V server-style setups. A 12V rack battery is a odd one; you're essentially paying for the aesthetic without the architecture making sense.

From my own static caravan setup I went down the 12V rabbit hole initially before realising 48V with a Victron MultiPlus made far more sense, especially once EV charging got added to the mix. The current handling at 12V for serious loads is just painful — cables the thickness of your arm.

If the OP is committed to 12V for whatever reason, Fogstar do decent prismatic cells if they want to rebuild/replace, and the BMS issue might actually be fixable depending on what protocol it's running. Worth checking if it communicates via CAN or RS485 and whether a third-party BMS like a Daly or JK could substitute.
