Single MultiPlus-II ESS in a 3-phase house with manual V2L backup

Been mulling something similar over for my static caravan setup and it's sent me down a proper rabbit hole, so thought I'd bring it here.

We're on a single-phase supply (obviously, most UK domestic installs are), but I've got a friend with a small workshop unit on a 3-phase TPN board who wants to retrofit a Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 on just one phase with ESS running through a Cerbo GX and ET340 meter. Critical loads shifted onto AC-out-1 — the usual approach.

The wrinkle is he's also got an EV with V2L capability and wants to manually plug that in as an additional backup source during a grid outage. So the question becomes — how does the MultiPlus actually behave when it's only covering one phase but the other two suddenly go dead? Does it just crack on with the critical loads, or does it get confused by the asymmetry?

And then layering V2L on top — has anyone actually done this? I'm imagining you'd need to isolate carefully before switching anything over, otherwise you're potentially backfeeding through the EV which nobody wants.

A few things I'm genuinely unsure about:

  • Does ESS mode complicate the grid-outage detection on a partial 3-phase setup?
  • Is a changeover/transfer switch on AC-in-1 sufficient, or do you need something smarter?
  • Any UK-specific regs (BS 7671 amendment 3 etc.) that bite you here?

Anyone tackled something like this, even on a single-phase version? Feels like the narrowboat community might have relevant crossover experience too.

@ThingamyBob the rabbit hole is real, mate. I went down it myself when I was sorting my cabin setup.

One thing worth flagging that caught me out — if you're thinking of using V2L as manual backup into a MultiPlus-II, watch your transfer switch arrangement carefully. The MultiPlus doesn't know it's looking at a generator rather than grid, so you can make it work, but your neutral bonding situation needs sorting properly or you'll confuse the inverter something chronic.

I run a Victron MultiPlus-II 48/3000 in my motorhome and the neutral handling is fussier than people expect.

For a static caravan, honestly consider whether a dedicated ESS assistant is even what you need, or whether generator support mode gets you 80% of the way there with far less grief. What's your battery chemistry?

Ran into this exact headache planning my garden office setup. Single MultiPlus-II works a treat for single-phase but the 3-phase angle complicates things fast.

One thing worth considering - if you're using V2L as manual backup, make sure your transfer switch can handle the potential frequency/voltage quirks some EVs throw out. Not all V2L outputs are perfectly clean sine waves.

For a static caravan though, you're probably not running anything phase-sensitive anyway? If it's just lighting, sockets, maybe a small heat pump - a single MultiPlus-II in ESS with a decent Fogstar battery bank will cover you without overcomplicating it. Keep the V2L as emergency-only rather than trying to integrate it properly.

What size loads are you actually looking to cover? That'd help narrow down whether you even need to worry about the 3-phase side of things.

Good timing on this thread — I went through almost exactly this with my boat-to-garden-office power project last spring.

One thing I'd add that nobody's mentioned yet: V2L output quality varies wildly between EVs. Some produce clean enough sine wave to keep the MultiPlus-II happy in passthrough, others cause it to throw fits. Worth checking your specific vehicle's V2L spec before you architect the whole system around it.

I tested three different cars before settling on one that played nicely with Victron kit. The MultiPlus-II's AC input sensitivity settings in VE.Configure gave me some wiggle room, but there's a limit to how forgiving you can make it without compromising other protections.

@WattHamish curious which vehicle you ended up using if you got that far — would be useful data for the thread.

@ThingamyBob one thing nobody's mentioned yet — if you're planning V2L as manual backup, check your EV's output wattage carefully. Most do 3kW continuous but some (looking at Ioniq 5/6) will throttle down if battery SoC drops below ~20%. Caught me out on the boat when I was using a Nissan Leaf for shore power during a marina outage.

Also worth knowing: a single MultiPlus-II won't see the other two phases during a grid outage, so any loads hardwired to L2/L3 are dark regardless. Plan your critical circuits on L1 only if you're going this route. Sounds obvious but people miss it.

Victron's ESS assistant docs cover the single-phase limitations fairly plainly if you haven't read them already.
