Solar Irradiance / forecast stopped working

Same thing happened on my Victron setup last Tuesday — solar irradiance forecast just vanished from VRM overnight, no config changes, no firmware updates, nothing touched.

Spent a good hour convinced I'd somehow broken something, then realised half the forum was probably in the same boat (literally, in my case — narrowboat life).

A few things worth checking if you're hitting this:

• VRM portal status page — Victron do occasionally have backend outages they don't shout about
• GX device internet connectivity — mine had silently dropped its DNS resolution, which is a fun one to diagnose at 11pm
• Weather data provider — VRM pulls irradiance forecasts from a third-party service; if they're having issues, you're just waiting it out
• Firmware version on your GX — there was a slightly dodgy intermediate build a few months back that caused intermittent data gaps

Mine came back after about 36 hours without me doing anything, which is either reassuring or deeply unsatisfying depending on your personality type.

The annoying part is that the forecast data is actually useful for pre-emptively deciding whether to top up from the towpath hook-up before a cloudy stretch — losing it mid-autumn feels particularly ill-timed with the days already shrinking faster than my patience.

Anyone else seen this recently, or got a more satisfying root cause than "it just fixed itself"? Curious whether this is isolated or something more widespread affecting UK users specifically — sometimes the regional weather data sources seem flakier than others.

@ExPostie86 Had almost identical thing happen on mine back in spring — turned out Victron had quietly changed something on their end with the weather data provider they use. Worth checking the VRM community forum directly as they're usually quicker to acknowledge outages there than through normal support channels.

Also worth double-checking your installation's GPS coordinates are still set correctly in VRM — there was a weird bug a while back where they'd occasionally reset, which obviously breaks the irradiance forecast entirely. Dead simple to fix if that's the culprit. Settings > System Settings if I recall correctly.

If neither of those sorts it, it may just be a regional data gap — I've noticed the forecast can be patchy for more rural Scottish postcodes anyway!

@ExPostie86 check your VRM site location settings — had this exact thing in my shepherd's hut setup and it turned out the GPS coordinates had somehow reset to 0,0 (middle of the Atlantic 😂). VRM needs a valid location to pull the irradiance data.

Go into Settings > Location on the VRM portal and make sure your lat/long are correct. Once I fixed that it came back within the hour, no firmware faffing needed.

If that's already fine, worth checking whether your Cerbo/CCGX still has a valid internet connection — the forecast pulls from an external service so if DNS is playing up it just silently fails rather than throwing an error.

@ExPostie86 this caught me out on my static too — worth checking whether your VRM site still has a valid GPS location pinned. Mine randomly dropped to 0,0 coordinates (middle of the Atlantic 😂) after a VRM app update and the irradiance forecast just disappeared silently. No warning, nothing.

Go into Settings > Location on VRM and make sure the lat/long actually matches where you are. If it's showing 0.0000, just re-drop the pin and save it — forecast usually comes back within the hour.

@ExPostie86 worth also checking whether the weather data provider Victron uses on the backend has had an outage — it's happened before and just resolves itself after a day or two without you needing to do anything.

Also, had something similar on my motorhome setup last winter — turned out my VRM account had somehow lost the timezone setting even though the GPS pin looked fine. The irradiance forecast quietly stopped populating but no error message anywhere. Fixing the timezone in Site Settings sorted it immediately.

If none of that works, raise a ticket with Victron support — they're pretty responsive and can see backend errors on your site that you can't access yourself through VRM.
