Been mulling this over for a while — is there a reliable way to properly test and verify MPPT controller performance without spending a fortune on professional kit?

My setup is a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 paired with a couple of 200W panels on the static, and I think it's performing well, but I've no real baseline to compare against. The Victron app gives you decent data, but it doesn't tell you whether the controller is actually tracking the maximum power point efficiently or just doing a reasonable approximation.

I've seen some DIY approaches floating around — essentially logging Voc and Isc independently then comparing against actual harvest. But the methodology seems fiddly and the margin for error feels too wide to draw meaningful conclusions.

A few things I'd want to understand better:

  • How much real-world efficiency variation exists between budget MPPT units and quality controllers like Victron or Morningstar?
  • Is partial shading throwing the tracking off more than I realise?
  • Would a decent clamp meter and some careful logging actually get me close enough?

There's probably a case for just trusting the Victron and moving on, but I'm sceptical by nature and would rather have actual numbers.

Anyone built something practical for this, or found a sensible testing methodology? Curious whether others have noticed meaningful discrepancies between what their controller should be harvesting versus actual output — especially those running Renogy or other budget controllers where the MPPT implementation is a bit more of a black box.

@DucatoProject honestly the simplest method I've found is logging your Victron's own data via VRM portal over a few clear days. Compare actual yield against theoretical based on your panel specs and irradiance data from a nearby weather station.

If you want to actually stress test the MPPT algorithm, chuck a variable load on the output whilst monitoring — you'll see if it hunts around or tracks properly.

The real tell is efficiency under partial shading or mixed conditions. My SmartSolar 100/30 handles it decently but I've seen cheap Renogy units completely fall apart when clouds roll in.

For proper irradiance reference without spending silly money, a £15-20 pyranometer clone from Ali isn't totally useless as a rough baseline.

What's your actual concern — poor yield, or do you suspect a fault?

One thing I've been curious about that nobody's mentioned yet: have you considered using a clamp meter alongside your Victron's built-in data? My concern with relying purely on VRM logging is that you're essentially trusting the controller to accurately report its own performance — which seems a bit circular.

Specifically, what I'd want to verify:

  • Actual current output vs what the SmartSolar reports
  • Whether the MPPT is genuinely tracking the peak or settling slightly below it during rapid cloud edge events

Has anyone done a proper independent measurement alongside the VRM data to validate the controller's own readings? That's the bit I'm still not satisfied I've cracked for my shepherd's hut setup.

Also — which SmartSolar model are you running? The behaviour can differ quite noticeably between the 75/15 and the larger units.

@DucatoProject the method I swear by is comparing your panel's actual Vmp/Imp (from the datasheet, temperature-corrected) against what the controller is actually tracking during a stable, clear noon window. Your Victron app shows live PV voltage and current — if the controller is hunting wildly or sitting stubbornly off the true MPP, you'll see it immediately.

I had a cheap Renogy unit years back that was claiming MPPT but essentially running PWM in disguise. Caught it by graphing midday output against theoretical yield on a spreadsheet. The gap was embarrassing.

A decent clip-on DC ammeter on the battery-side cable alongside the Victron's own readings gives you a useful sanity check too — nothing exotic, nothing expensive. Real-world sustained output versus calculated expectation tells you everything professional kit would, just slower.

@Pylontech_Queen that temperature correction point is really important — do you have a go-to formula you use for that, or are you working off the datasheet temperature coefficients manually each time?

Asking because I've been trying to nail down something similar for my shepherd's hut build. I've got a couple of panels feeding a Victron SmartSolar and I'm never quite sure whether I'm seeing genuine MPPT tracking or just reasonable-looking numbers.

Does panel age/degradation throw the comparison off significantly? My panels are second-hand so I can't fully trust the original datasheet specs. Wondering whether it's worth getting a clamp meter on the input side to at least verify Imp independently rather than relying solely on what the controller reports.
