Swapped my lead-acid for a Fogstar Drift 100Ah LiFePo4 last spring and honestly the Goal Zero's built-in charge settings had me tearing my hair out — turns out "lithium" mode on those units is about as well-calibrated as my ex-husband's sense of direction.

The main thing to nail down is your absorption and float voltages — LiFePo4 wants roughly 14.2–14.6V absorption and ideally no float (or float set to ~13.5V at most), but Goal Zero locks a lot of that away behind their own firmware. Bit cheeky really.

A few things worth checking:

  • Panel wattage vs. controller rating — the 1250 uses a built-in MPPT, but it's not exactly a Victron SmartSolar, so don't expect miracles if you're stacking panels aggressively
  • Max input voltage — stay well under the rated ceiling, especially in cold morning conditions when Voc spikes
  • BMS communication — does your LiFePo battery have any comms port? The Goal Zero ecosystem is quite closed, so you may be flying blind on state-of-charge accuracy

Personally I've moved most of my van setup over to a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 because at least I can see what's happening via Bluetooth without needing a ouija board.

Anyone else on here wrestling with Goal Zero's lithium settings, or found a workaround for getting more granular control out of it? Curious whether the newer firmware versions have improved things at all — mine still feels like it was written by someone who'd heard of lithium batteries but never actually met one.

@AnneButler worth being precise here — the Goal Zero 1250's "lithium" mode is tuned for their own Lithium NMC cells, not LiFePo4. Different chemistry, different voltage profile entirely.

LiFePo4 wants:

  • Absorption/bulk: ~14.2–14.4V
  • Float: 13.5–13.6V (some argue lower)
  • No equalisation — turn that off completely

The Yeti's custom voltage settings are limited, which is the actual problem. Fogstar Drift has a BMS that'll protect it to a degree, but you're still not charging optimally.

Honestly for a garden office setup like mine I ditched the built-in controller entirely and ran a proper Victron SmartSolar inline. Gives you full LiFePo4 profile control via Bluetooth. Bit of rewiring but worth every penny.

What voltages are you currently seeing at full charge?

@AnneButler the Goal Zero 1250 doesn't let you manually set absorption/float voltages which is the real problem. You're essentially stuck with whatever their firmware decides "lithium" means.

For a Fogstar Drift you want absorption around 14.2V and float at 13.6V — the Goal Zero's NMC-tuned profile will likely push higher than that.

Honestly if you're serious about LiFePo4 long-term, the Goal Zero ecosystem is a bit of a dead end for custom chemistry management. Swapped mine out for a Victron SmartSolar ages ago — proper BMS communication via VE.Direct and you can dial in exactly what the Fogstar wants through the app.

Not saying bin the Goal Zero entirely, but be aware you're flying a bit blind on charge termination. Keep an eye on cell temps if nothing else.

@AnneButler had exactly this headache with a different inverter-charger on my static van setup. What sorted it for me was running the Fogstar Drift through a separate Victron SmartSolar MPPT rather than relying on the built-in charge controller at all — gives you full custom voltage profiles via the VictronConnect app.

The Drift's BMS will protect it to a point, but you really don't want to be relying on that as your primary safeguard against improper charging long-term.

Might be worth treating the Goal Zero as your inverter/power station and routing your panels through a dedicated MPPT first. Adds cost, but you get proper LiFePo4 profiles (bulk ~14.2V, float ~13.5V, no absorption needed really) and Bluetooth monitoring as a bonus.

@AnneButler swapped my Goal Zero for a Victron SmartSolar the moment I realised "lithium mode" on those things is basically just marketing with a voltage sticker slapped on it — best £140 I ever spent on the van.

@AnneButler this is such a familiar story — I went through something similar on my narrowboat before eventually moving to a Victron setup. The thing nobody mentions is that "lithium mode" on a lot of these all-in-one units was essentially designed around early LiFePo4 specs, not the tighter voltage windows the Fogstar Drift actually wants.

If you're stuck with the Goal Zero for now, worth checking whether the Fogstar's BMS is doing any heavy lifting to compensate — some of them will throttle charge acceptance rather than let the voltage creep. Not ideal long-term, but it buys you time while you decide whether to invest in a proper MPPT controller.

What absorption voltage is the Goal Zero actually pushing to? That'd help narrow down whether you've got a real problem or just an anxious BMS doing its job.
