Been mulling over relocating my Multiplus-II setup and wondered if others have gone through similar upheaval.

My current arrangement has the inverter/charger in the utility room, which made sense when I first installed everything — easy access, close to the consumer unit, simple cable runs. But the setup has grown considerably since then (added a Cerbo GX, expanded the Fogstar battery bank to 15kWh) and it's starting to feel cramped and frankly a bit domestic-unfriendly. Partner's patience is wearing thin with the blinking lights and occasional fan noise.

The obvious solution seems to be moving the whole lot into an outbuilding, maybe 8–10 metres from the incoming supply. A few things I'm genuinely unsure about though:

  • Cable sizing — at that distance with a 5kVA unit, am I looking at 35mm² or 50mm² DC cabling between the batteries and inverter? Voltage drop is my main concern.
  • Environmental considerations — shed will get cold in winter. Fogstar cells have charging cutoffs below 0°C, so do people run low-power heating in the outbuilding, or just let the BMS handle protection?
  • ESS configuration — does moving the unit physically change anything in the ESS assistant setup, or is it purely a physical/wiring job once you've got the grid connection sorted?

Has anyone relocated an existing ESS installation rather than starting fresh? Wondering whether it's worth a full recommission through a registered electrician or if a competent self-installer can manage the transition sensibly.

Happy to share what I end up doing if there's enough interest — feels like a gap in the forum knowledge base for UK installs specifically.

@OakSoul the utility room placement makes sense initially but it does bite you later. Moved my Multiplus-II from a similar spot into the motorhome garage area and immediately noticed the difference in cable run lengths — shorter DC runs matter more than most people realise when you're dealing with the currents involved.

Few things worth considering before you commit to a new location:

  • Ventilation — these units throw off decent heat under load
  • DC cable length — every extra metre costs you in losses and voltage drop
  • Cerbo GX proximity — keeps comms cables tidy
  • Ambient temperature — Victron will derate in heat

What's your battery setup? If you're running Fogstar Drift or similar lithium, the BMS comms routing might influence where everything needs to sit relative to each other.

@OakSoul one thing nobody seems to mention when relocating a Multiplus-II is the DC cable run length — every extra metre introduces voltage drop that'll skew your battery SOC readings and potentially trigger low-voltage disconnects earlier than necessary. Victron's own guidance suggests keeping DC runs as short as practically possible, and on my narrowboat I learned this the hard way when a 3-metre run to my Fogstar Drift lithiums was causing the MPPT and Multiplus to disagree on state of charge by nearly 8%.

Cable sizing becomes critical — you're not just compensating for current capacity, you're compensating for resistance. Use the VictronConnect cable sizing tool and then go one gauge heavier than it recommends. Where exactly are you thinking of relocating it to, and what's the approximate battery-to-inverter distance you're working with?

@DefenderAdventure raises a fair point on DC runs — I learned that the hard way when I set up my shepherd's hut system. Ended up having to upsize my DC cabling considerably because the battery bank couldn't sit where I'd originally planned.

One thing worth adding: ventilation often gets overlooked in the planning stage. Utility rooms and similar enclosed spaces can get surprisingly warm, and the Multiplus-II will throttle output if it overheats. I've got mine mounted on an exterior-facing wall which helps enormously.

Also worth double-checking your RCD/MCB arrangement before you move anything — relocating sometimes tempts people to reconfigure the AC wiring and that's where mistakes creep in. The Victron install guides are decent but they assume a lot of prior knowledge.

@DefenderAdventure and @GazPrice have covered the DC cable grief nicely — I'd just add that relocating a Multiplus-II is basically a rite of passage. You think you've planned it perfectly, then spend three hours on the floor questioning your life choices whilst your partner asks "is the kettle working yet?"

One thing worth considering if
