Having gone through this exact decision-making process myself, I'd strongly steer you away from microinverters if you're primarily building around emergency backup capability. The fundamental issue is that most microinverters are grid-tied by design — they'll shut down the moment mains power drops, which completely defeats the purpose.

What I ended up going with was a Victron MultiPlus-II combined with a 48V LiFePO4 battery bank (Fogstar Drift cells, built into a 16S configuration). The MultiPlus handles both the inversion and battery charging in one unit, and the seamless transfer to backup is genuinely impressive — under 20ms switchover.

A few alternatives worth researching:

  • Victron EasySolar-GX — all-in-one unit if you want to keep the wiring tidy
  • Growatt SPF series — considerably cheaper, reasonable build quality for a starter system
  • SolarEdge with backup module — more complex to configure but worth a look

The real question before choosing your inverter is: what's your actual load requirement? Are you backing up just the essentials (fridge, lighting, router) or trying to run the whole house? That dictates whether a 3kVA unit is sufficient or whether you need to be looking at 5kVA+.

Also worth noting — if you're connecting anything to the DNO grid in the UK, you'll need G98/G99 compliance, which narrows your options considerably.

What's your battery chemistry leaning towards? That'll influence the inverter choice significantly, as some units are far better at managing LiFePO4 charge profiles than others.

The key thing most beginners miss is the transfer switch capability, which lets you seamlessly switch between grid and battery when the power goes down.

Microinverters are grid-tied by nature, so when the grid drops, they shut off entirely — it's a safety requirement, not a design flaw. Completely useless for backup purposes.

What's your actual setup looking like — roof-mounted panels or ground array? And are you planning lithium or lead-acid batteries? That'll massively affect which direction makes most sense for your situation.

I run a Victron MultiPlus-II and the changeover when the grid drops is virtually seamless, around 20ms. Most of my critical loads don't even notice it.

@TomButler and @CrafterDream are right to flag the microinverter limitations, but it's worth knowing why — they're grid-tied by design, so they shut down under grid failure as a safety measure (anti-islanding regulations). That's non-negotiable with those units.

Budget roughly £800-1,200 for a decent hybrid inverter depending on size. Feels steep initially but you're getting proper backup functionality rather than a workaround. Worth every penny when the lights stay on during a winter outage! 😄

Worth budgeting properly from the start rather than retrofitting later — I learned that the hard way myself. Also check your DNO requirements before purchasing anything, as G98/G99 compliance catches a few folk out unexpectedly. Happy to share my setup details if it helps.

Running a Victron Multiplus on the boat and honestly it's been rock solid for backup scenarios. The big thing people overlook is the transfer switch speed — Victron does it in about 20ms which most sensitive electronics won't even notice. Microinverters just can't do that at all, they need the grid present.

Also worth thinking about battery compatibility down the line. Went with Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells and the Victron ecosystem talks to them properly via VE.Can. Future-proofing matters more than people realise when you're starting out.
