Never heard of SunGold DC before — interesting choice. Is that a US brand? Curious how you're getting on with it over here, spares and support can be a nightmare with the more obscure inverter brands.

The split phase side of things is what catches my eye. Not something you see discussed much on UK forums since we're running 230V single phase, so I'm guessing you've either got some American equipment to run or you've got a specific reason for going that route?

A few things I'd want to know:

  • What's the idle draw like? My Victron Multiplus is surprisingly lean but I've seen some of the budget inverter-chargers absolutely massacre a battery bank just sitting there
  • How's the charger profile? Can you set custom absorption/float voltages or is it fixed?
  • Any BMS comms capability or is it dumb charging?

I'm running a 48V LiFePO4 setup with Fogstar Drift cells and comms between the inverter and BMS is something I'd never go back from now. Makes a massive difference to how hard the charger pushes the cells.

Worth keeping an eye on the cooling fan behaviour too — some of these lesser-known brands run the fans flat out constantly which drives you mad if it's anywhere near living space.

Would be good to see some photos of the install if you've got them. What are you powering from it?

@DalesWanderer yeah, SunGold is definitely US-market oriented — you'll find it all over Amazon.com but UK availability is patchy at best. The split-phase output is really designed around American 120/240V systems anyway, which makes me wonder about the use case here?

For a UK narrowboat or off-grid cabin you'd normally want a straight single-phase 230V setup. Split-phase can be wired to give 240V but it's a bit of a bodge and you're relying on support from a brand with essentially zero UK service network.

Victron Multiplus or even a Growatt would give you far better long-term peace of mind — firmware updates, local dealers, proper documentation in English-English rather than translated-American.

What's the actual application? That might help figure out whether the split-phase architecture is actually causing problems or just sitting there unused.

Good point from @PanelEwan there. One thing worth flagging specifically for UK use — check the transfer switch timing carefully on these units. Some of the US-market inverter-chargers have a slower AC transfer that can cause issues with certain sensitive equipment, and the generator input voltage tolerance may be calibrated around 120V split-phase assumptions rather than our 230V single-phase setup. Worth double-checking what the actual AC input range is set to before connecting anything.

Also, do you have a model number or spec sheet? "Split phase" in the US sense means something quite different to how we'd use mains here, so I'd want to understand exactly how you're planning to integrate it into your system before assuming it'll just work straight out of the box.

Ran a US-spec inverter in my motorhome a couple of years back — different brand but same story. The support issue is real, especially if something goes pear-shaped under warranty. Getting parts shipped from the States adds weeks and costs a fortune.

Personally I'd have gone Victron or even a Fogstar-compatible unit where you've got actual UK distributors who'll pick up the phone.

That said, if it's already bought and running, just make sure you've got solid documentation of your setup — wiring diagrams, settings screenshots, the lot. When (not if) you need to troubleshoot, you're largely on your own with these brands so being methodical saves a lot of grief.

What's the actual use case — cabin, van, EV charging? Makes a difference to how critical the support gap really is in practice.

The support headache is something I learned the hard way with my shepherd's hut build. Started out with a bargain inverter-charger nobody had heard of — looked great on paper, specs seemed solid. Six months in, a firmware quirk caused it to randomly drop loads mid-evening. Emails bounced, the UK "distributor" turned out to be one bloke in a shed.

Ripped it all out and went Victron MultiPlus. Night and day difference — dealer network, VRM monitoring, active UK community who've seen every fault mode imaginable.

For a shepherd's hut especially, where guests might be relying on it, obscure brand risk feels higher than the saving justifies. @DalesWanderer's point about spares is the real killer — even if you get support eventually, waiting three weeks for a control board from a US warehouse while your system's dead isn't a position you want to be in.
