Swapped out the old alternator on my 32ft sloop – worth the hassle?

Not a marine setup myself — I run a static caravan with Victron kit for emergency backup — but I'm genuinely curious about this crossover between boat and off-grid power.

A few questions if you don't mind:

  • What alternator did you swap to, and what were you running before?
  • Are you seeing noticeably faster charge times on your house bank?
  • Did you need a smart regulator alongside it, or does the new unit handle that itself?

The reason I'm asking is that I've been looking at whether a higher-output alternator makes sense as a secondary charging source for my static setup (paired with solar). I know it's a different context entirely, but the battery chemistry decisions seem pretty similar — especially if you've moved to lithium on the boat side.

I've read a fair bit about the Wakespeed WS500 regulator being popular on sailing forums for lithium-compatible alternator charging. Is that the sort of route you went down, or did you keep it simpler?

Also curious whether the installation was straightforward or whether you needed a sparky involved. On a 32ft sloop I imagine access to the engine bay is not exactly generous.

Would love to hear how it's bedded in after a few weeks of use — whether it's made a meaningful difference to how long you can run instruments and refrigeration at anchor without worrying. That kind of real-world data is exactly what's hard to find online.

Hey @BoxerAdventure, great crossover question! The principles really do translate well between marine and static setups. One thing worth knowing is that marine alternators often have to work harder due to the damp environment and longer charging cycles, so the upgrade conversation is quite relevant to both worlds.

For your Victron setup specifically, if you ever consider adding a DC-DC charger to link a vehicle or generator alternator into your system, the lessons learned from marine installs are gold. Victron's Orion-Tr Smart is popular on boats for exactly that reason.

What Victron kit are you running currently? Knowing whether you've got a SmartShunt or battery monitor would help folk here give you more tailored advice about optimising charge cycles, which is where the real crossover with marine systems gets interesting.

Not my territory — boats are a different beast and I'd be useless on anything that floats. My motorhome and static caravan setups are firmly on dry land. 😄

That said, @BoxerAdventure if you're running Victron for emergency backup in a static, the alternator charging logic from marine setups does translate surprisingly well. Victron's MPPT and DC-DC chargers don't really care whether they're on a sloop or parked on a Welsh hillside.

Main thing I'd flag — marine environments are brutal on kit. Corrosion kills connections faster than anything. Whatever crossover advice you pick up here, double-check the IP ratings match your actual conditions rather than just nicking a boat owner's parts list wholesale.

@BoxerAdventure mate, I live on a narrowboat so this is basically my entire life. Alternator upgrade was one of the best things I did — went from a knackered 65A unit to a proper 120A with an external regulator, and paired it with a Victron Orion-Tr Smart for DC-DC charging into the LiFePO4 bank.

The crossover to your static setup is more relevant than you'd think. Same Victron ecosystem, same absorption/float logic, same BMS comms headaches.

One thing boats teach you that static folk often miss — redundancy. On the cut, if your charging fails you're just... stuck. Worth thinking about even in a caravan context.

What Victron kit are you running exactly? MultiPlus?

@GrumpySparky curious what alternator you landed on — I keep going back and forth on whether a high-output unit is worth the faff when you could just throw a proper DC-DC charger (Victron Orion-Tr Smart, obviously) between whatever alternator you've got and your battery bank.

My static runs Victron throughout and I've been eyeing up adding EV charging at some point, which throws up similar "how do I get serious current from a limited source" problems. The parallels between marine alternator management and off-grid solar/grid-tie balancing are actually quite interesting once you start pulling at the thread.

Main thing I'd want to know — are you running LiFePO4? Because that changes the alternator conversation dramatically. You can't just hammer lithium with an unregulated alternator without cooking either the battery or the alternator itself, sometimes both.
